Paxil is an SSRI antidepressant introduced in 1992 by GlaxoSmithKline. Paxil was the first formally approved SSRI for the treatment of panic disorder in the United States.
Starting at a low dose can also minimize some of these side effects because it gives your body time to adjust to the medication. Paxil is usually taken once each day and may be taken with or without food.
Some people experience some improvement of symptoms within one or two weeks of starting paroxetine. Full therapeutic effect, however, may not be achieved for about eight weeks. Before you take Paxil, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, seizures, glaucoma, bipolar disorder, or a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.
You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant such as Paxil, especially if you are younger than 24 years old.
Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.Side effects are quite common with SSRIs in general, with the medications affecting sexual function and appetite in many patients. Headaches and nausea are also reported, though these normally subside after a short time.
Paxil should not be taken in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or within 14 days before or 5 weeks after treatment with Paxil. MAOIs are a class of drugs used to treat depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions, and Parkinson's disease.
Paroxetine may increase the effect of the blood thinner, warfare, leading to excessive bleeding. Therefore, warfarin therapy should be monitored more frequently in patients who are also taking paroxetine.
Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in short-term studies in children and adolescents with depression and other psychiatric disorders.
Anyone considering the use of paroxetine or any other antidepressant in a child or adolescent must balance this risk with the clinical need.Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Paxil. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, insomnia, seizures, glaucoma, bleeding from the stomach or esophagus (tube that connects your mouth and stomach), or severe kidney or liver problems. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Before discontinuing Paxil, talk with your doctor. Some people have reported withdrawal-like symptoms when decreasing or stopping SSRI therapy. It is believed that these symptoms are the result of the brain trying to stabilize serotonin levels after an abrupt change.
