North Carolina legislators pass workers' compensation bill | Raleigh ...

North Carolina businesses that meet certain criteria must purchase workers' compensation insurance. The insurance is designed to provide compensation to injured workers who suffer an injury while working. Among other things, available benefits under these policies cover medical bills and lost wages.

Earlier this year we wrote about the results of an investigation conducted by the News & Observer regarding the number of employers who carry the required workers' compensation insurance. The result of that investigation was likely a surprise to many North Carolina workers. A staggering number of employers in the state, who under the law are supposed to purchase workers' compensation insurance, had not. The number was in the tens of thousands.

Perhaps at least in part prompted by that investigation, the state took note of the number of employers failing to comply with the requirement. North Carolina legislators recently passed a bill focused on reducing that number. The legislation is known as HB 237. Though in passing, the bill sounds like a good thing, a provision that was added at the last minute could prove to be troublesome.

The provision, designed to provide confidentiality to businesses providing this information to the group that sets workers' compensation insurance rates, appears to restrict the public from gaining access to information on which companies do in fact have the required insurance. Under the bill, the investigation recently conducted by the News & Observer would not have existed since investigators would not have been able to view records regarding the matter.

What do you think about this? Should the public be privy to information regarding which employers follow the law regarding workers' compensation insurance?

Sony: New racing wheel peripheral has "double the accuracy of a DualShock."

The PlayStation Move Racing Wheel peripheral for PS3 will have "basically double the accuracy of a DualShock," Sony has announced.

This information comes from the US PlayStation Blog, where SCEA research and development engineer Anton Mikhailov detailed the bizarre spaceship-shaped controller in the video below.

Each handle has a "DualShock-style motor" for directional rumble. The Move itself can also vibrate for various degrees of sensory feedback. Since the device is powered entirely by the Move, it won't require any additional batteries.

For motorcycle-based games, the grips expand until the whole thing resembles motorcycle handlebars. The right grip has a twist throttle in it working in tandem with the rumble.

In addition to racing games, Sony explains the contraption's added precision would make a nice fit for flying games too.

Titles that support the peripheral include: the upcoming LittleBigPlanet Karting, Gran Turismo 5, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Burnout Paradise, MotorStorm Apocalypse, and more.

The PlayStation Move Racing Wheel is coming this Autumn to North America where it will retail for $39.99 . No European release has been announced.

I am one of the final 4 candidates for getting a job at apple retail store by my house. This is the fourth and final interview and am hoping i am already in. First interview was a hiring event two groups of about 30 people. Second interview was one of the store managers a recruiter and I. Third was with the HEAD store manager of the store i am applying to. btw the head manager absolutely loved me and said he would love for me to work in his store. And now july 2nd at a panera bread near the apple store i am meeting with the regional manager of four apple stores in my area. At this point i feel that the first interview is apple selecting who would fit them. And i think that the second interview is the make it or break it. 3rd and 4th is just meeting the managers and regional manager to get a thumbs up. what do y'all thing? i spoke to an employee at the store i am applying to and he said he went to his final 4th interview few months ago with 3 other candidates as well and all got hired. plus i have yet to read a interview review on glass door.com where somebody did not get a job offer after making it to the final 4th interview. otherwise any tips anyone?

India to discuss Headley`s extradition with US: Chidambaram

India to discuss Headley`s extradition with US: Chidambaram New Delhi: Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Headley had worked with an American government agency before defecting to Pakistan to turn a terrorist and India will discuss the issue of his extradition with the US, Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Friday.

He said India had got access to the 50-year-old Pakistani American during which sleuths of Indian security agencies had met him in the US, besides getting other reports on Headley.

"I think the further question is whether we will get further access to Headley, whether he would be extradited to India...These are matters to be discussed with US authorities," he told reporters in response to a question.

India to discuss Headley`s extradition with US: Chidambaram

Headley, who had recced the Mumbai terror attack targets on behalf of LeT, is currently in the custody of the US authorities and awaiting sentence after his conviction in a 26/11 case registered in America.

Chidambaram said Headley was working with the US Drug Enforcement Agency and he had subsequently defected to Pakistan and turned an LeT operative.

The Home Minister said whenever there would be an opportunity, India would take up with the US government the issue of Headley's extradition.

India to discuss Headley`s extradition with US: Chidambaram

"As you know, Headley has been convicted by a US court pending sentencing. Only after that exercise is completed, can we say whether Headley will be extradited to India. I am pretty confident that Headley will be given a long sentence in the US," he said.

Dr. Ewa Kleczyk on Business, the Pharmaceutical Industry and ...

InTech, in its mission to not only put the highlights on its open access, scientific books but on its perspective authors as well, talked to Dr. Ewa Kleczyk, author of the chapters ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry? (from the book ?Risk Management Trends?, Giancarlo Nota, 2011), ?The Determinants of Corporate Debt Maturity Structure? (from the book ?Business Dynamics in the 21st Century?, Chee-Heong Quah, and Ong Lin Dar, 2012) and co-author with Darrell J. Bosch of ?Households? Preferences for Plumbing Materials? (from the book ?Corrosion Resistance?, Hong Shih, 2012).

Risk Management Trends

Risk Management Trends

Dr. Kleczyk obtained her PhD in Economics from Virginia Tech in 2008 and is currently employed as the?Senior Director, Custom Analytics at ImpactRx (formerly TargetRx), firm that provides pharmaceutical and biotech companies with information regarding the criteria in product choice and adoption for their brands. Among other, Dr. Kleczyk has been awarded for her diligent work by Cambridge Who?s Who, TargetRx Excellence Award, the American Business Women?s Association and the National Association of Professional Women as Dr. Kleczyk has been known and praised for her engagement in promoting women in science.

We talked to Dr. Kleczyk about her career, her paper titled ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry?, the controversial pharmaceutical research field in general and open access.

InTech: For how long have you been researching risk management in the pharmaceutical industry?

I have worked in the Pharmaceutical Consulting Industry for the past 6 years that includes working in the area of new product forecasting and risk management.

InTech: In your chapter ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry? you state that deciding which new products to develop is a major challenge for many pharmaceutical companies with an excess of opportunities, but limited resources. Is it possible that these limited resources prevent some excellent new medicines to see the light of day and cure or relieve the symptoms of a certain population sub-group suffering from rare illnesses?

I think the current ways of selecting products has become subjective and cost driven, impacting negatively the types of products that are taken to the market. Some products should be brought to the market, but due to the scares resources and a number of potentially more profitable drugs in the pipeline, they might not be available for patient use.

For example, recently, Big Pharma has decided to decrease the research finding for neuroscience drugs, as they have high financial and time research costs. This unprecedented decision might result in inadequate treatments of the growing elderly population for diseases such as depression, sleep disorders, Alzheimer, and Parkinson.

Pharmaceutical Industry

?I think the current ways of selecting products has become subjective and cost driven, impacting negatively the types of products that are taken to the market.? ? Ewa Kleczyk

InTech: As you wrote, until the late 1980s, cash flows, expected returns, and net present value of income were the key variables in the decision-making process of the new drug development and investment. So according to your research, how have things changed?

The Consumer Theory and its research techniques have become an important part of the new product potential evaluation process. Understanding the product perceptions of potential consumer groups, their adoption speed and rate can help more precisely investigate the product uptake, as well as inform the investment decisions into the new drugs. However, this research should not be done in a vacuum, as this method only covers the demand aspect of the new product potential research. Joining this research with the Net Income Analysis would ensure looking at the production costs and risks, as well as the future potential sales of the product when available for use.

InTech: How would you like for your research to be perceived by risk assessment managers?

I would like my chapter to be viewed as helpful to the risk assessment managers in making new product decisions. Knowing the available evaluation methods of new product potential and knowing when to use each of the different technique should help the management in making their investment and research decisions.

?InTech: While researching this specific field, what information you came across which struck you the most?

The information that struck me the most while doing my research for this chapter was the small number of chemical molecules that become available for patient use. Only 1% researched molecules is brought to market. This finding underlines the importance of understanding the key issues of new product risk management to properly identify the chemical molecules for investment.

InTech: You are a successful researcher publishing articles in journals, books and lecturing at conferences. You are also socially active by encouraging women to pursue a career in fields such as mathematics, traditionally ruled by men. What is your perception of women in science today?

Women play a significant role in all areas in today?s world, including business, politics, academics, and sciences. It is very encouraging for many young women to know that they can be whoever they would like to be in their professional lives, as long as they work hard and are committed to their goals.

However, I think, we, the professional women, should continue mentoring and encouraging girls and young women to study mathematics, sciences, and economics, as the work is not done yet. In today?s world being a super model, reality star, and actress seems more interesting and appealing to many young women, due to greater public exposure and high financial rewards.

Promoting women in science

Promoting women in science

I think creating sponsorship or mentorship programs at educational institutions could help to promote women in sciences and business. In addition, the financial support many women receive to pursue education in these areas should continue to be distributed. The more support women get, the more likely they to follow their dreams, and become part of the scientific, political, and business cultures.

InTech: You published under the Open Access model. What is your personal opinion on unlocking scientific content to a wider audience then ever before, removing the barriers previously held by traditional scientific publishers?

Open Access Journals have revolutionized sharing of scientific information, and promoted innovation and timely dissemination of research results. Prior to the Open Access Journals, the publishing process was very lengthy, and able to reach only a limited number of readers. Today, within a couple of months (sometimes even a shorter time frame) information can be shared with a wide audience of readers. The timely research dissemination helps for quicker socialization of new concepts, as well as further improvements of researched topics.

InTech: Do you think Open Access is beneficial to all scientists and researchers?

I truly believe that the Open Access Journals are beneficial to all scientists and researchers. As mentioned above, the shorter time frame of research dissemination, and ability for sharing work with a greater audience, inspires innovation and collaboration within the scientific community. I would want to caution the journals though from publishing any documents they receive as a submission. Some of the published work is not to up to the research standards, impacting the credibility of these new venues. Greater oversight should be implemented to limit potentially low quality of work from publishing.

InTech: In terms of a more fertile, subsidised and collaborative scientific environment, how do you compare Northern America to Europe?

In the recent 30 years, the US has become the innovation centre for technology and sciences. Researchers from all over the world arrive to the US to participate in research opportunities provided by the US government as well as private companies. I believe this level of involvement is not seen in the continental Europe, although in order to compete with the US innovation, the European Union has increased research funding for European researchers to retain current and attract new talent.

InTech: What are your impressions on InTech as your Open Access publisher?

I think InTech is a respectable venue for all authors to publish their work in, and receive world-wide exposure to their research. I was very happy to see the number of scientists from different countries contacting me about my work, and sharing their perspectives on the risk management subject.

InTech: Are you satisfied with the editor?s work, the management of the publishing process and the InTech?s publishing team?

I had a wonderful experience working with the InTech Team. The attention to detail and professionalism has made the process quite simple and enjoyable. Overall, I am very delighted by the process of publishing with InTech, and have already submitted another chapter for review.

InTech: Tell us something about your future plans.

In 10 years from now, I would like to lead a market research / consulting company. Even with increased technology, informative data analysis is a necessity to making the optimal decisions for any business. With declining budgets, making the right decision has become even more important, consequently having a highly qualified team, working to help clients finding the right solutions for their business needs, will help to save money, and increase profitability of the company.

Clothing the body electric: Cotton T-shirt fabric can store electricity, maybe keep your cell phone charged

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Over the years, the telephone has gone mobile, from the house to the car to the pocket. The University of South Carolina's Xiaodong Li envisions even further integration of the cell phone -- and just about every electronic gadget, for that matter -- into our lives.

He sees a future where electronics are part of our wardrobe.

"We wear fabric every day," said Li, a professor of mechanical engineering at USC. "One day our cotton T-shirts could have more functions; for example, a flexible energy storage device that could charge your cell phone or your iPad."

Li is helping make the vision a reality. He and post-doctoral associate Lihong Bao have just reported in the journal Advanced Materials how to turn the material in a cotton T-shirt into a source of electrical power.

Starting with a T-shirt from a local discount store, Li's team soaked it in a solution of fluoride, dried it and baked it at high temperature. They excluded oxygen in the oven to prevent the material from charring or simply combusting.

The surfaces of the resulting fibers in the fabric were shown by infrared spectroscopy to have been converted from cellulose to activated carbon. Yet the material retained flexibility; it could be folded without breaking.

"We will soon see roll-up cell phones and laptop computers on the market," Li said. "But a flexible energy storage device is needed to make this possible."

The once-cotton T-shirt proved to be a repository for electricity. By using small swatches of the fabric as an electrode, the researchers showed that the flexible material, which Li's team terms activated carbon textile, acts as a capacitor. Capacitors are components of nearly every electronic device on the market, and they have the ability to store electrical charge.

Moreover, Li reports that activated carbon textile acts like double-layer capacitors, which are also called a supercapacitors because they can have particularly high energy storage densities.

But Li and Bao took the material even further than that. They then coated the individual fibers in the activated carbon textile with "nanoflowers" of manganese oxide. Just a nanometer thick, this layer of manganese oxide greatly enhanced the electrode performance of the fabric. "This created a stable, high-performing supercapacitor," said Li.

This hybrid fabric, in which the activated carbon textile fibers are coated with nanostructured manganese oxide, improved the energy storage capability beyond the activated carbon textile alone. The hybrid supercapacitors were resilient: even after thousands of charge-discharge cycles, performance didn't diminish more than 5 percent.

"By stacking these supercapacitors up, we should be able to charge portable electronic devices such as cell phones," Li said.

Li is particularly pleased to have improved on the means by which activated carbon fibers are usually obtained. "Previous methods used oil or environmentally unfriendly chemicals as starting materials," he said. "Those processes are complicated and produce harmful side products. Our method is a very inexpensive, green process."

Aaron Simpson will honor Pat Tillman at UFC on Fuel 4

Aaron Simpson went to Arizona State with NFL player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Simpson became friends with Pat's brother Kevin, and Pat and Kevin would come to wrestling meets to support Simpson and the other Sun Devil wrestlers.

"I can remember exactly where I was when I found out Pat was killed, and how I handled it, which wasn't good," Simpson told Cagewriter. To honor Tillman and his legacy, Simpson will wear the number 42 on his fight shorts for his bout with Kenny Robertson at UFC on Fuel 4.

"I want people who don't know him to at least give notice to who he was. Look him up. Honor his family, his wife, and bring more viewership to his foundation, the Pat Tillman Foundation."

Tillman surprised the sporting world when left a promising and lucrative NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals to become an Army Ranger after the September 11th attacks. He was killed in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.

He went to high school in the San Jose area, where Simpson's fight will take place. It seemed like the perfect time for Simpson to honor Tillman. Kevin agreed.

"I texted Kevin, and he said, 'Pat would really appreciate it. Pat would have loved this,'" Simpson said.

"He didn't want to be known for what he did in serving the military. He was the kind of guy that wasn't about himself or bringing recognition to himself or what he did. He was a team player. I don't want to make too big. In a way, it's a kind of personal thing. I just want to remember him."

The Pat Tillman Foundation gives scholarships to military families. Support them here.

Facebook Adds BBC As Latest Partner For Summer Sports Push With A New Streaming App

bbc facebookLast week, Facebook staked out its claim as a prime destination for people looking for this summer's Olympics coverage online. Today, the BBC threw its hat into the social media ring, too -- it's putting its sports coverage into a new Timeline app. The app, which is only usable by UK users, is currently in beta form (pictured here) and live already: people can currently access streams of Wimbledon. That will get ramped up in coming weeks for Olympics coverage, when it will be some of the most comprehensive Olympics coverage yet seen on the social network -- 24 streams in all -- and will mark the first time that the BBC will stream live events using Facebook. The move comes at a time when the BBC is ramping up its digital activities in long-view bid that this will need to become a much stronger part of its business as more traditional revenue streams continue to decline.

21 EBay Inventory Management and Online Selling Tools ? SMB ...

In the fourth quarter of 2011, eBay Marketplaces reported 100 million active users worldwide. According to eBay on its marketplace a woman?s dress sells every 8 seconds and someone buys a cell phone every 5 seconds. ?

EBay is still a very popular buying and selling platform and used by many different types of sellers ? SOHO ecommerce owners, part-time eBay enthusiasts and large businesses. Different sellers need different eBay tools.? While eBay offers its own listing tools, you may find ? like many other people do ? that eBay?s tools don?t provide the listing features you need; for example, listing your inventory across multiple auctions sites in addition to your own Web store.

Many of the inventory management and multiple-channel selling tools for eBay sellers we list below offer a free trial, so you can try different eBay tools to see which ones best suit your business needs before you make a cash investment.

Even if you sell on eBay and make a profit, many sellers prefer to manage their own off-eBay Web store and list the same products on other sites such as Amazon or eBay alternative sites.? Don Grady Dead: Composer, Star Of 'My Three Sons' Dies At 68

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? Don Grady, who was one of television's most beloved big brothers as Robbie Douglas on the long-running 1960s hit "My Three Sons," died Wednesday. He was 68.

His "My Three Sons" co-star Barry Livingston, who played youngest brother Ernie, confirmed Grady's death to The Associated Press. Livingston said Grady had been suffering from cancer and receiving hospice care at his home in Thousand Oaks, Calif. But the exact cause and place of death were not immediately clear.

"It's the oldest cliche in the world when TV brothers start referring to each other like biological brothers, but he was the oldest, and somebody I looked up to and learned from a great deal about life," Livingston said.

Born in San Diego as Don Louis Agrati, Grady had a brief stint singing and dancing on "The Mickey Mouse Club" starting at age 13.

But he was best known by far as one of Fred MacMurray's "My Three Sons" on the series that ran on ABC and later CBS from 1960 to 1972.

The popular show, which featured MacMurray as a widowed aeronautical engineer struggling to raise three older boys, was among the longest running family sitcoms of all time with 380 episodes.

In the show's earlier years Douglas was actually the middle brother, with Tim Considine playing the oldest, Mike, and Stanley Livingston playing the youngest, Chip. When Considine departed, Barry Livingston became the adopted "third" son, and Grady became the cool, handsome and assured eldest brother that much of America adored.

A musical prodigy from a young age, Grady appeared with a band, the Greefs, in the series, and in real life played drums for The Yellow Balloon, who had a minor hit with a self-titled song in 1967.

He made a handful of guest appearances on TV series in the 1970s and 1980s, but worked primarily as a musician and composer, writing the theme for "The Phil Donahue Show" and music for the Blake Edwards film "Switch" and the popular Las Vegas show "EFX," a showcase for "Phantom of the Opera" star Michael Crawford.

"The one real through-line in his life was music," Livingston said. "I would think Don would love to be remembered for his great music as much as a teen idol and television icon."

Three Internet Marketing Filters for Small Business

Small and medium sized?businesses?with marketing agendas are now operating in the best and worst of times. SMB?s are benefitting from incredibly high consumer technology and social media adoption rates that combine with a new and expansive landscape of startup and renovated?marketing?solutions companies. ?Conversely, I sympathize with today?s small business operator, adept but usually overwhelmed by familiar?opportunities and challenges that fill their days and weeks, now having to differentiate between the scores of new digital marketing companies hawking their platforms, technologies, and solutions that will ?help? them get discovered or connected on the internet more easily and less expensively.

Trying to make the right decision can sometimes feel like walking through mud. ?To help, we can outline some big filters anyone can use that will rule in and out certain solutions and strategies. ?First, some context.

Last week BIA/Kelsey?s lead social media analyst released his first in a series of reports on the?characteristics and behaviors?of SMBs?operating a Facebook page. ?If you can accept Facebook marketing as a?bellwether?indicator, the data points to earlier stage and growth oriented companies as dominant adopters of new internet marketing technologies.

?

Small growing companies are poised for more experimentation, but have lower tolerance levels and funding for mistakes that can derail or slow down progress and badly needed results. ?One of the most common overestimations SMBs make is how much time can be invested in these new technologies at the expense of other core business activities. ?Last week Evanne Schmarder published a telling post on 5 Social Media Marketing Myths?to underscore that ?It?s true that you can sign up and create a profile on popular platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Tumblr, and Pinterest for free. However, a monetary value must be placed on the time spent to develop the platform and the creation and implementation of an online social media strategy?.A strong plan will include assigning responsibility, creating content, exploring productivity tools, monitoring your outreach, building relationships, putting in place and measuring key performance indicators, etc?takes time, and time is money.??

Getting help from outside digital marketing vendors has the built in ROI of time savings and expertise. ?So let?s talk about some easy decision filters that resource and revenue starved small or early stage businesses can use. ?Digital marketing companies tend to offer three kinds of solutions that make for easy filtering:

  1. Single product solutions providers?are sometimes a very good choice and could have the richest solution for any one strategy. For example, website development, cost per click campaigns, or email tools. ?The decision a business operator must make here is which strategy to pick and hope it?s the right one since all eggs will be in one basket. ?Alternatively, a business could choose to have multiple single service suppliers and platforms that they will need to invest time in learning, managing, and executing. ?It is critical to understand up front for any of these solutions providers how much of the business operator?s time is required in activating and managing the marketing tasks and if the supplier does any of the execution. ?Time is money, and expertise is required to succeed. ?Many businesses shy away from multiple vendor relationships wanting one fuller service company to work with.
  2. Saas (software as a service) platforms that provide multi functional dashboards to manage multiple internet marketing strategies like SEO, social listening, email deployment, social media management, measurement, reporting, blogging, etc. ?The advantage here is that the business operator has a place to more?efficiently?manage all of these activities instead of learning and logging into multiple platforms for each, but often will need to execute all the activity themselves. ?These software options tend to offer slightly lower monthly fees to the platform vendor, but require the highest levels of manpower hours. ?Remember, these are software platforms you are buying. ?It is like purchasing Microsoft Office or Quicken. ?Their value lies in their use and execution by the business operator. ?One of the most common misconceptions that SMBs have when they choose this path is that they are checking off lots of boxes and strategies, but quickly learn that all they have is a more?efficient?way to execute, investing 40 instead of 60 hours a month in digital marketing management.
  3. Turn-key single or multiple strategy supplier?solutions tend to have slightly higher monthly costs to the vendor, but can also reduce the time investment for the SMB by up to 90%. ?It is never advisable to think any solution, even these more full service ones, will be effective on complete vendor auto-pilot. But, the time savings from third party execution and expertise deployment can be highest here. ?These vendors will often manage social profiles, create web content, design websites, execute social campaigns, set up listening tools, extrapolate reporting, and provide active account management.

These three filters for digital marketing vendor selection can make the whole process more manageable. They should make sense to most business operators and help weed out certain investments based on time and ROI metrics. The trick is to be honest with yourself and to place a fair monetary value on time invested in digital marketing that could otherwise be applied to core business activities. ?The choices should become more straightforward and feel a whole lot less like walking through mud.

Hulu lands major HBO deal? in Japan

Hulu just announced a major content partnership with HBO for its Japanese subscription service that will make episodes of shows like Entourage, Sex and the City and The Sopranos available to Japanese audiences. Shows will be available on Hulu Japan for a limited time, and the release will be staggered: Viewers will be able to watch the first season of Sex and the City starting in July and through September, with episodes of the second season becoming available in August and the third season popping up on the service in September.

Hulu?s SVP of International Johannes Larcher announced the deal on the company?s blog, where he also said that the content offered by Hulu Japan has grown by 300 percent since its launch less than a year ago. From his blog post:

?The amount of content available to subscribers overall has increased by more than 300% since the service launched in September 2011. There are now more than 800 films and nearly 6,900 TV show episodes from 24 content providers. And we have continued to heavily invest in creating original subtitles for TV shows that have never before been available in Japan, including new series like ?Sons of Anarchy?, ?The Office? and ?It?s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.?

Hulu?s Japanese service is subscription-only, and the company lowered its price earlier this year to increase demand. Larcher said that Hulu now has 19 people working in Japan.

U.S. users of Hulu shouldn?t hold their breath for HBO content coming to the service any time soon. The shows added to the Japanese catalog are all part of the DVD window, and HBO has been successfully established its own online service HBO Go in the U.S. ? and access to that offering is limited to cable TV subscribers who also pay for HBO access as part of their cable bill.

Michelle Obama urges church-goers to vote

By Alicia M. Cohn - 06/28/12 04:22 PM ET

First lady Michelle Obama on Thursday urged an audience composed of delegates and leaders from the oldest black religious denomination in the country to get out the vote and fight for their hard-won voting rights.

?And to anyone who says that church is no place to talk about these issues, you tell them there is no place better,? she said at the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church?s conference in Nashville. ?Because ultimately, these are not just political issues; they are moral issues.?

The first lady was the keynote speaker at the AME Church?s General Conference, a gathering of delegates and leaders from around the world held every four years to discuss, debate and pass legislation impacting the denomination?s mission.

Obama delivered a message of social and civil activism, rallying the crowd by speaking about the civil-rights movement and the accomplishment of electing the first black president. She did not address the Supreme Court?s ruling, released shortly before the meeting, that President Obama?s signature healthcare reform legislation is constitutional.

Instead, she spoke of the similarities between living out faith and living out a democracy.

?You see, living out our eternal salvation is not a once-a-week kind of deal,? she said. ?And in a more literal sense, neither is citizenship. Democracy is also an everyday activity. And being an engaged citizen should once again be a daily part of our lives.?

She compared that ?real work of democracy? to the real work of faith.

?It?s kind of like church,? she said. ?Our faith journey isn?t just about showing up on Sunday for a good sermon and good music and a good meal. It?s about what we do Monday through Saturday as well, especially in those quiet moments, when the spotlight?s not on us, and we?re making those daily choices about how to live our lives.?

She went on to describe the ministry of Jesus Christ as ?fighting injustice and speaking truth to power every single day.??

?And our charge is to find Him everywhere, every day by how we live our lives,? she said of Christ.

She urged the church group to be ?informed? of the daily issues, and to show up to vote ?every year in every election.?

?[T]oday, how many folks do we know who act like that right doesn?t even matter?? she asked. ?After so many folks sacrificed so much so that we could make our voices heard, so many of us just can?t be bothered.
?
?But let?s be very clear, while we?re tuning out and staying home on Election Day, other folks are tuning in,? she warned. ?I know that in the face of all of that money and influence, it can start to feel like ordinary citizens just can?t get a seat at the table. And that can make you feel helpless and hopeless. It can make you feel or think that you?re powerless.?

Obama did not specifically refer to the outside spending groups known as super-PACs, many of which have formed to support Republicans including her husband?s GOP rival Mitt Romney. But Obama?s campaign has warned that such influential groups will be outspending him in the election.

?For the first time in modern American history, the incumbent (that's us) will get outspent in a re-election campaign ? by some estimates as much as 3-to-1,? Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter wrote in an email to supporters earlier this week.

?Time and again, history has shown us that there is nothing ? nothing ? more powerful than ordinary citizens coming together for a just cause,? Obama told the AME Church audience. ?And I?m not just talking about the big speeches and protests that we all remember. I?m talking about everything that happens between the marches, when the speeches are over and the cameras were off. ? That is the real work of democracy: what happens during those quiet moments between the marches.?

She added that she knew she was ?preaching to the choir? to a denomination that was founded, in 1816, out of a protest against slavery.

?I'm here today to urge you to continue that work and bring others along with you,? she said. ?Because we know that the only way to be heard above all the noise is to lift our voices up together.?

Democrats begin attack on Pa. GOP's spending plan

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Democrats in Pennsylvania on Wednesday attacked a newly unveiled $27.7 billion state spending plan written by majority Republicans, calling it a gift to big business that will lock in this year's deep cuts in aid to public schools while forcing longer waits for people who need services such as treatment for mental illness or addiction.

The legislation, made public just four days before the new fiscal year begins, passed the House Appropriations Committee on a party-line vote Wednesday morning after two hours of debate. The House adjourned Wednesday without action on the bill, and floor debate was expected to begin Thursday morning. The plan will need Senate approval after that.

Democrats were getting their first look at the document after having been excluded from private negotiations between Republican Gov. Tom Corbett and his fellow Republicans who control both chambers of the state Legislature.

"I think this budget represents a woefully misplaced priority," Rep. Matthew Bradford, D-Montgomery, said during the committee meeting.

With lawmakers hoping to wrap up work for the summer on Friday, Republicans still had a lot to do.

They met privately for long periods Wednesday over various last-minute efforts to insert pet provisions into budget-related legislation. Among those was a Corbett administration attempt to win House support to absorb seven different pots of aid for county-administered services ? for the homeless, mentally ill and disabled, neglected or abused children and drug and alcohol addicts ? into one block grant program.

"I would say that we have a reasonable amount of work to do," House Speaker Sam Smith, R-Jefferson, said after leaving one meeting.

Many nonprofit groups that carry out much of the state's safety-net services oppose it for fear that mandated services, such as child-abuse investigations or court-ordered counseling, will drain much of the money.

House Republicans sought to change the way gambling-financed grants for public construction projects are distributed, while Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Jake Corman, R-Centre, pressed for a provision to remove the state income tax deduction that Pennsylvania allows on contributions toward 529 college-savings plans operated by other states.

Meanwhile, final legislation remained under wraps Wednesday for Corbett's top priority: a $1.7 billion tax break that he wants in an effort to lure a new petrochemical industry to Pennsylvania.

The plan for the 2012-13 fiscal year that begins Sunday would increase spending by about 1.5 percent, largely for debt, pensions, health care for the poor and to help fill a shortfall in the almost-finished fiscal year. It also would cut taxes for businesses by almost $300 million and leave nearly $400 million in reserve from tax collections that are expected to rise by more than 3 percent.

To save money, it would cut 10 percent from aid for many county-run social services and hundreds of millions of dollars from programs in the massive Department of Public Welfare budget that benefit poor, childless adults. Most public schools would get the same amount of aid after sustaining a cut of more than 10 percent this year, while an extra $50 million would be distributed to struggling school districts in an effort to avert a financial collapse.

Regarding cuts to county-administered social services, Bradford said, "we don't even pretend to explain how they're going to make that 10 percent cut work."

Republicans defended the need for the cuts, citing the increasingly expensive state share of public employee pension costs and arguing that helping businesses will enable them hire more people.

"This is a sustainable budget," said House Appropriations Committee Chairman Bill Adolph, R-Delaware.

Advocates for nonprofit social service providers say prevention programs, such as counselors in schools for children who are showing signs of trouble, could be first on the chopping block.

Republicans were also advancing a proposal to require the welfare department to collect a broad range of financial information from nonprofit providers of state-funded social services, such as salaries, association dues, lobbying expenses, administrative expenses and the cost of delivering services.

Bernadette Bianchi, the executive director of the Harrisburg-based nonprofit group Pennsylvania Council of Children, Youth and Family Services, said that information is already public in the form of IRS reports and audits, and suggested that the service providers are being unfairly targeted.

"We're talking about kids that have already been abused and neglected. That's our target audience and somehow we're being identified as part of the problem instead of part of the solution," Bianchi said.

Young Aroostook County athletes make strong showing at Maine ...

BREWER, Maine ? Kes Lavoie has always been a baseball player. The 13-year-old from Bangor played this spring on the Cohen Middle School ?A? team and also competes on a Junior League squad.

On a damp, gray Tuesday, she demonstrated her strong throwing arm ? this time, with a softball in her hand.

Lavoie uncorked a throw of 145 feet, 6 inches to win the ages 13-14 softball throw during the 35th Maine Hershey Track and Field State Championship meet at Pendleton Street Field in Brewer.

?I?ve been playing baseball and I realized that I was able to throw a lot farther than most of the girls my age,? Lavoie said.

?My farthest throw I?ve done is 157, so I was trying to get 160 today, but I don?t know what happened,? she said. ?The ball was kind of wet and it was harder to throw.?

More than 200 youngsters ages 9 to 14 earned the right to compete in the state meet, which is run by the Maine Recreation and Parks Association and sponsored by the Hershey Co.

The athletes, who came from cities and towns across Maine, were vying to earn spots in the Hershey Track and Field Games North American Final, scheduled Aug. 4-5 in Hershey, Pa.

Tim Baude, Maine chairman for the Hershey Games, said each state and Canadian province is guaranteed five competitors at the North American Final. Mainers are going up against competitors from the other New England states and the Maritimes.

He said it will be approximately two weeks before any of the Maine winners learn whether they earned a trip to Hershey.

?[It?s a] four-day, all-expenses-paid trip by Hershey,? said Baude, adding that the athletes and their parents are flown to Pennsylvania, where they stay and eat for free. ?They actually open the [candy-making] plant one day for us. They get to go to Hershey Park, stay at college dorms and get to meet kids from all around the United States and Canada.?

Tuesday?s meet brought together runners, jumpers and throwers in three different age groups: 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.

Aspen Cote of Madawaska and Daniel Hemminger of Portland demonstrated their versatility as three-event winners.

Cote claimed the 100 meters (14.27 seconds), the 200 (29.71) and the long jump (7 feet, 4? inches) in the girls 13-14 age group. Hemminger won the 100 (14.32) and also took the 200 (29.80) and the softball throw (147-10) for boys ages 11-12.

Adam Bohlen of Bucksport enjoyed a successful day on the track in the boys 13-14 division. He claimed the 1,600 with a time of 5:41.43 and then won the 800 in 2:34.69.

?It felt great,? said the 13-year-old, who runs middle school cross country and track in Bucksport. ?I beat my last record [in the 1,600] by 10 seconds.?

In both races, Bohlen had to fend off late challenges by competitors. He edged Jake Flewelling of Easton in the 1,600 and Thomas Dupuy of Greenville in the 800.

?I heard him [Flewelling] behind me, but that means I know the last lap I had to go even harder,? Bohlen said.

Caribou?s Parker Deprey won the 100 (16.12), the softball throw (119-9) and ran on the first-place 4?100 relay (1:10.87) along with Ethan Holdsworth, Carter Quist and Jordan Duplissie in the 9-10 division. Isaac Robison of Bangor won the 100 (13.36) and the long jump (8-7) for 13-14 boys.

Niko Naranja of Fort Kent won the 400 meters (1:13.67) and was part of a first-place quartet in the 4?100 (1:04.38) along with Alex Nissenbaum, Zachary Nadeau and Max Ouellette among 11- and 12-year-olds.

That group continued Fort Kent?s tradition of excellence in the boys relay. Nadeau, Naranjo and Ouellette had been part of previous Hershey winners.

?If you actually trust your friends, that they can do well, you have this feeling that it?s going to be easier for you to push it because they?re depending on you and themselves,? Ouellette said.

Aroostook County sent 133 athletes to the meet, including a talented 9-10 girls contingent. Paige Espling of Caribou won both the 400 (1:25.61) and the long jump (6-7?) and finished second to Caribou?s Emma Hixon by one-hundredth of a second in the 50.

?I start out jogging and then when I get to that [last] corner I usually start sprinting,? Espling said of the 400.

Bailey Bellefleur of St. Agatha, running for Fort Kent, showed off her speed in the 11-12 girls bracket. The 11-year-old won both the 100 (14.82) and the 200 (31.40).

Fort Kent teammate Dolice Tanguay was a double winner among the 9-10 girls, taking the 100 (16.02) and the 200 (33.94). Kolleen Bouchard of Houlton, competing in the 11-12 girls, threw the softball 129-2 to earn first place and was second in the 100.

?I don?t know if it?s enough to make it to Hershey. They can throw far down there,? she said of her softball throw.

Bouchard also is playing in an all-star softball tournament at Hermon.

Other girls winners included ? ages 9-10, girls: 4?100, Houlton (Emma Drew, Alyssa Abbotoni, Grace Johnson, Lauren McGillicuddy), 1:14.71; softball throw, Alana Legasse (PI), 65-8; boys: 50, Connor Demerchant (PI), 8.50; 400, Ethan Holdsworth (Car), 1:19.21; 200, Sawyer Deprey (Car), 34.12; long jump, Holden Stoutameyer (PI) 6-7.
