What Robert Caro Got Wrong

In the second phase, starting in 1982, on the 20th anniversary of the crisis, some of JFK?s top advisers?McNamara, Sorensen, national security adviser McGeorge Bundy, and others?confessed, in a article for Time magazine, that Kennedy had made a secret deal: Khrushchev would take the Soviet missiles out of Cuba, and Kennedy, six months later, would take America?s very similar Jupiter missiles out of Turkey. It had always been known that Khrushchev offered such a deal, but the earlier accounts?including Sorensen?s book, and many other books based on it?had reported that Kennedy rejected it. In fact, the advisers now said, Kennedy accepted it, but told both the Russians and the handful of his own advisers whom he let in on the secret never to tell anyone. (The advisers decided to break their silence because they knew the Kennedy Library was about to release the tapes.)

LONDON (AP) -Liverpool appears set to hire Brendan Rodgers as its new manager.

The hire would vault the Northern Irishman from relative obscurity to one of the toughest jobs in soccer, with his current club Swansea claiming a deal was expected to be finalized on Thursday.

Following talks with Liverpool's American owners - Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox - Rodgers told Swansea on Wednesday he has been offered the job as Kenny Dalglish's replacement at Anfield and was ready to accept.

Supposed new iPhone casings show up with tall body, tiny dock connector, tons of mystery (update: a bit of the front too)

Image

When it rains, it pours -- after a tiny drizzle of tall iPod touch leaks, we're suddenly faced with a deluge of photos of what might just be the next iPhone's back plating. If that's what we're looking at through photos supplied by a historically reliable uBreakiFix, talk of bigger iPhone screens might just pan out, as it looks decidedly taller than the iPhone 4S we use today. Apple may likewise be going all old-school iPhone on us, with a modern twist: we could be reverting to an aluminum back with more receptive materials (likely glass) at the ends, just in a much thinner form that keeps the steel antenna band. Perhaps the most intriguing bit is at the bottom, where rumors of a much smaller dock connector may have been validated along with a shift of place for the headphone jack. There's still a chance we're looking at an elaborate KIRF or an early engineering prototype that could change, but given that 9to5 Mac just got very similar images with black trim, there's a real possibility that we've just been given a sneak peek of what to expect from Apple later this year.

Update: A handful of extra photos have surfaced at 9to5 that show a bit of the front, as well as better views of the back. It's looking like the new model won't quite be as skinny as some photos suggest, and we're digging the different-hued, two-tone design a bit more now that it's not being subjected to Mr. Blurrycam. We've included the more choice shots in the gallery.

[Thanks to Brandon and Steven from uBreakiFix]

LG's Android 4.0 upgrades for Optimus LTE, LTE Tag, Vu start in June

LG Optimus LTE, Optimus LTE Tag, Optimus Vu

LG has been leaving its smartphone owners on pins and needles for their promised Android 4.0 upgrades. It's now starting to take action: if we go by poorly machine-translated Korean, the Optimus LTE, Optimus LTE Tag and Optimus Vu will all get Google's latest starting June 4th. Everyone gets the new UI 3.0 layer, but those who've leapt on the Optimus Vu's phablet frame will get "additional features" that we understand will take advantage of the extra-wide dimensions for side-by-side note-taking. LG's remarks still leave some gaps in the Ice Cream Sandwich story, such as when Nitro HD owners get the new software. Even so, we're glad to see that owners of LG's crème de la crème in at least some corners of the Earth can enjoy Chrome and other Android 4.0 perks in the very near future.

Startup Venture Capital Essentials Business Plan Writing ...

Startup Venture Capital Essentials: Business Plan Writing

When applying for a startup capital for your business venture, venture capital firms and banks would go to your business plan to identify if your business would fit their strategies. The business plan undergoes a scrutinizing period and would tell if you are serious about it. Therefore, it is very important to come up with a proper business plan.

There are some entrepreneurs that think that just because they have a great idea it would be sufficient enough. Unfortunately, that is not the case. If you show up with a bright idea but an incomplete business plan, then chances are your business plan gets dismissed.

Here are some tips for writing a good and solid business plan which would reflect your solid business idea:

? A vision-mission is important. Going straight to the business plan during the meeting is insufficient. What you need is something that would make venture capital firms and whoever would read your business plan what kind of values your business is built on. You would need to make them understand both the long-term and the short-term goals of your business.

? Indicate what your market or your target customer base want. You do not launch a business because ?you? think that this kind of business would be ideal for the market. You are building a business centered on your preferences, not on what the customer wants. Include them in the plan by showing the market pulse, by showing them numbers that customers really need your product or services.

? Do not underestimate competition in your business plan. Address the fact that you have competition and devise a plan that would enable you to work ahead of your competitors.

? Leave some space in your business plan for additional information or changes.

? Include in your business plan why your business would beat competitors, point out what makes you unique.

? You would also have to make sure that your business plan has all the complete elements.

There is a format for a business plan and you should follow it. Here is the format:

? Title page and table of contents.

? Executive summary. This gives the VCs or the banks a general idea what your business is about, what kind of industry and a short description. You can also put it in the last part of the plan.

? Management team and key personnel. People who are involved in making decisions in the company should be stated here.

? Description of the product or service.

? Market research and analysis of the product or service. This would be where you will show how profitable and ?hot? your product is.

? Marketing plan. Marketing, sales projects and promotion plan or strategies should be included here.

? Manufacturing schedule and production plan.

? Financial plan. This is one is very important. Financial strategies and everything related to financial matters should be stated here.

? Risk analysis. You will describe what situations or occurrences can break your company in this part.

? SWOT analysis. An analysis about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
? Purpose or use of loan proceeds.

? Summary. This summary would focus on the potential income that your business is expected to generate from.

? Appendix or supporting documents.

A credible business plan would show venture capital firms, how serious you are to raise your capital. And they would not doubt you and your future business venture?s success and credibility.

Poetry: Heteronymic collections | Overland literary journal

The Keeper of Fish
Alan Fish (edited by Philip Salom)

Keeping Carter
MA Carter (edited by Philip Salom)
Puncher & Wattman Poetry

Poetry is popularly considered to be an art of the self. When the figure of the poet is parodied, it?s most often as an emo in a puffy shirt, a narcissistic creature of absurdly heightened sensibility. Like any caricature, it?s an image that is wildly incomplete and that, at the same time, contains an element of truth. Recently in the Boston Review, critic Marjorie Perloff acidly outlined the contours of ?a certain kind of prize winning, ?well-crafted? poem ? a poem the New Yorker would see fit to print and that would help its author get one of the ?good jobs? advertised by the Association of Writers & Writing Programs?.

According to Perloff, such a poem looks like this: ?1) irregular lines of free verse, with little or no emphasis on the construction of the line itself or on what the Russian Formalists called ?the word as such?; 2) prose syntax with lots of prepositional and parenthetical phrases, laced with graphic imagery or even extravagant metaphor (the sign of ?poeticity?); 3) the expression of a profound thought or small epiphany, usually based on a particular memory, designating the lyric speaker as a particularly sensitive person who really feels the pain, whether of our imperialist wars in the Middle East or of late capitalism or of some personal tragedy such as the death of a loved one.?

Keepers -- cover

In Perloff?s anatomy, contemporary poetry is Romanticism?s inbred, decadent heir, delivered by way of the Confessionals to the contemporary creative writing market. The autobiographical self of the poet is central: it?s the poet?s sensitivity, his or her lived authenticity, that defines the authenticity of the poem. The formal aspects of the poem, ?the word as such?, retreats in importance to a secondary characteristic: it is the superficial plumage with which the poet conducts his or her courtship of the reader. The personality of the writer, as promoted on a million websites, is the ?branding? of the poem, a necessary attribute in a swollen and fiercely competitive market. Never has the author been less dead.

Perloff, highlighting the ?uncreative writing? of poets such as Kenny Goldsmith or the aleatory techniques of John Cage, points out that poetry includes avant-garde traditions that push hard against this self-centred ideology. However, the culture that valorises the poetic self might be challenged through proliferation as much as through erasure. The most famous exponent of this approach is the Portuguese poet Fernand Pessoa, the inventor of the heteronym. The heteronym is more than a pseudonym ? it?s the invention of an entire poetic personality, complete with biography, particular formal style and critical viewpoint. Pessoa produced, at last count, more than seventy.

Which brings me to Philip Salom?s recent trilogy, Keepers. The first collection, published in 2010, is Keepers (by ?Philip Salom?): a series of linked poems that forms an implicit narrative about the staff and students of an unnamed School of Arts. Theatrical, playful and sly, the book is above all a dazzling and deft celebration of poetic form, underlaid by a bass note of mortality that gives its mischievous shape-shifting unsettling depths. The Keeper of Fish and Keeping Carter emerge from the first book: they are heteronymic collections, respectively by Alan Fish and MA Carter, edited by Philip Salom. Alan Fish figures in Keepers, mostly in footnotes, as a general dogsbody and cleaner who lives in the campus basement; we learn that he is a poet and is planning to publish a book. Carter is more mysterious: in Salom?s forward, he strongly suggests that this heteronym, who writes poetry ?in secret?, is in fact a pseudonym.

Keeper of Fish -- cover

For all the (slightly arch) editorial conceit, I?m not certain that these fictional selves quite qualify as heteronyms. Although both voices work a distinct mode or key, each seems the invention of a particular poetic consciousness. As George Steiner commented, Pessoa?s heteronyms were ?exceedingly strange?: ?For each of his ?voices?, Pessoa conceived a highly distinctive poetic idiom and technique, a complex biography, a context of literary influence and polemics and, most arrestingly of all, subtle interrelations and reciprocities of awareness.? Fish and Carter, although they share some of these characteristics, seem closer to what Pessoa called a ?semi-heteronym?. Speaking of the semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares, Pessoa says that ?his personality, although not my own, doesn?t differ from my own but is a mere mutilation of it?. In the case of the self-consciously misanthropic Carter and the alienated and melancholy Fish, mutilation seems like the proper adjective: their poems reveal that they are both, in different ways, damaged men.

What is unarguable is that this prismatic refraction of selves has been extraordinary liberating for Salom. Both collections are buoyed with a sense of lightness and freedom, a formal curiosity that expresses itself as a rhythmic and sonic joyousness in the DNA of the poems. If sometimes I felt that both the Carter and Fish collections lacked the continuous invention of Keepers, with some of the lesser poems thinning out into mere poetic fictions, the books have a linguistic and dramatic energy that makes you keep reading. And both collections include some fine poems. Fish, for instance, in the poem ?Dream for a Daughter?, meditates on the complex grief of watching his daughter grow up and become estranged from him, creating a startlingly ambiguous and spare emotional delicacy:

One of her wings has broken off
in my hands. I stare helplessly.

The stump of its shoulder root
protruding like lamb?s horn

from her skin. She is so pale
and innocent she hasn?t noticed ?

In contrast, Carter?s voice is driven by anger. As he says, ?my flag is the choleric?. This results in some very funny poems (?Old Cunts?, for instance) in which outrage screws the language into pitiless focus, and a few, those in which wit or linguistic tension slackens, that are merely vicious. Mostly they sustain their own suspensions. In ?Jesus saves me?, Carter sardonically contemplates redemption while chopping onions, the onion tears, a purely physical response, paradoxically becoming a genuine expression of sadness. Many of the poems turn on violence ? political violence, murder ? a theme that bleeds into smaller, but equally significant, violences of the psyche. In the poem ?Drive In Screen?, for instance, representation itself becomes a kind of death:

It looked like Death in a strange
white coat. It became Sybil
tinnily through metal speakers
propped on the car windows.
She was hideous. And she was
everywhere. She was a window
the terrible transfer of her face
smeared across it, the shattered
glass of a shattered window
her wrists dragged themselves
Onto ?

Perhaps Salom?s proper antecedent, especially for Carter, is the John Berryman of ?Dream Songs?, and his alter ego, Henry. Like Berryman, Salom?s Carter works with comedic vexations, meditations that reach from the intimate to the metaphysical, a colloquial contempt, an encroaching despair that emerges as rage. The language is looser than Berryman?s, less wound around itself. This is, I think, partly a function of Salom?s prosaic punctuation, as opposed to Berryman?s emphatic dashes and ampersands.

Keeping Carter -- cover

There are complex reflective games going on in the trilogy: as well as referencing each other, the poems reach forward and back in a continuous meditation on culture as historical memory, personal expression or social construction. Carter ? obsessed with Bach and Glenn Gould, the mathematically precise in tension with the improvised ? tends to look outward, commenting on the society around him. Fish, unlike Carter, has an identity in this complex fictional reality, but all the same declares he is ?anonymous. I learnt / myself from language?. He writes lyric poems about the incidents of his life ? the death of his wife through cancer, his daughter, his aquarium.

Both poets share a common elliptical perception (both liken cats, for instance, to inverted commas) and a pleasure in linguistic play. And both circle endlessly around dilemmas of masculinity, sexuality and relationship, which become the axes of an increasing anxiety and alienation. Neither is, by any means, a reliable narrator. As Carter says, ?The I is the biggest con artist in poetry?.

The Keepers trilogy as a whole is a full-frontal attack on the autobiographically authenticated poem that, all the same, often masquerades as precisely that kind of poem. Salom seems to be having his cake and eating it too. But what matters most is the language itself, the attention paid by Salom to ?the word as such?: at its best, this distils into a formal spikiness and liveliness that makes these collections an experience of perpetual surprise.

Joan, meanwhile, has finagled a place at the partner?s table, by way of a sordid assignation with Herb from the Jaguar dealers? association. It made Lane look bad, for pretending to be Joan?s friend?urging her to ask for a 5 percent partnership, rather than cash?when in fact he was serving only himself, hoping to conceal his financial skullduggery a few weeks longer. It made Roger look horrible: ?I?m not going to stand in the way, but I?m not paying for it,? he said, marking nothing but his first refusal to pay for something all season. Compost Happens! | Boorinakis Harper Ranch

My goodness, I can?t believe I missed writing something for International Compost Awareness Week! (Yes, it most certainly is a real thing!)

When I took the UC Master Gardener training last year, we spent quite a lot of time on compost for the ?Master Composter? element of certification. (After the first day, I couldn?t wait to get home and start turning my rather neglected compost heap ? it was seriously that inspiring.)

As Master Composters, we?re honour-bound to talk up the joys of decomposition and organic nutrients at every available opportunity? and so, of course, it was only a matter of time for me to do so here! (Oh, and don?t miss our Homestead Radio Hour interview with Kevin ?The Worm Whisperer? Marini, UC Extension expert, at the end of this post? talk about inspiring! His contagious enthusiasm will have you marching out to the yard, pitchfork in hand.)

If you don?t already have a compost pile, by all means, let?s do something about that right away! It really is very simple: all you need is a bit of outdoor space. If that isn?t an option, you can even compost indoors with a worm bin (see below). No excuses, right? Compost piles and bins take many forms, from the very basic heap to elaborately-engineered multiple bins and rotating tumblers; don?t be intimidated by all the fancy and expensive equipment proffered by garden catalogues and home-improvement stores. Start with something simple ? if you outgrow it, or you find that composting is really your ?thing,? you can always upgrade later.

Glamour shot of my beloved compost pile:

So, let?s begin at the beginning?

What do you need to make compost?

There are four key ingredients:
? Organic matter ? we need a balance of Carbon and Nitrogen to make really great nutrient-rich compost
? Air / Oxygen ? necessary for decomposition. If the pile goes anaerobic ? without air ? you?ll end up with a slimy, stinky mess. Good aeration makes for a happy, odor-free compost pile.
? Water / Moisture ? for much of the year, adding kitchen scraps and yard waste regularly will contribute enough moisture to your pile. In summer, however, you may need to water it occasionally. If you dig around and the pile looks dry or dusty, add water slowly so that it can soak in.
? Micro- and macro-organisms ? you can buy all kinds of magical compost-starting elixirs, but there is no need ? these friendly critters will move in on their own! Earthworms, fungi, bacteria, and other decomposers are key to a healthy compost pile.

If all these factors are present then compost will ?happen? all by itself, but for the best (and neatest) results, you will need a compost bin or designated ?pile? area with adequate ventilation and, ideally, a size of 27 to 125 cubic feet (3x3x3 feet to 5x5x5 feet). You will need to gather green (nitrogenous) and brown (carbonaceous) organic material, mix them in your bin or pile, and moisten the mixture if necessary. Mix and turn the pile each week, checking for moisture and adding water if it is too dry.

A couple of tried-and-true designs for backyard composting:

Movable compost pen

Advantages: simple and inexpensive to make; requires few tools and materials; can be moved easily to a different location or disassembled when the compost is finished to allow for easy spreading in the garden; you can build it to whatever size you like.
Disadvantages: Not as sturdy as permanent bins; in order to turn the compost you will need to ?dump? the bin and then refill it; if you are cutting wire fencing to height, it?s a good idea to cover or file down the pointy ends of the wires, especially if children or pets will be playing around the bin.

We use these moveable ?pens? out in the orchard to compost leaves and larger volumes of garden/yard waste. They?re perfect if you have a large quantity of material at once (think raking the lawn in autumn) and aren?t in a hurry to make compost. Turning your pile speeds up the decomposition process, but this is a good lazy, low-maintenance way to get the job done, and the fence ring keeps everything nice and neat (no windstorms/dogs/chickens spreading your leaf pile all over the yard!) If you set up the pen where you want the compost to eventually end up ? i.e. in your vegetable garden ? you can simply remove the ring and spread the finished compost when it?s done.

Multi-bin system

Advantages: Allows for fast composting, easy turning, and you can keep adding new, fresh material to the first bin without contaminating the ?cooking? or finished compost in the other bin(s). Sturdy and high-capacity. Easy to add a lid to if pests or nosy neighbours are a problem.
Disadvantages: more complicated and expensive to build than simpler bins; more tools and materials needed for construction; takes up more yard space.

We have a two-bin composting system that we adapted from a salvaged bin of uncertain provenance. (It used to have an astro-turf ?roof? on top ? go figure.) Multi-bin systems can be built out of pallets, scrap lumber, shipping crates, etc, or purchased ready-made. Our two-bin setup works nicely; fresh material goes in the left-side bin. When that fills up, I transfer it to the right-side bin to finish composting, and we start filling up the left bin again. Both sides get turned regularly. Really serious composters often use three-bin systems, in which the ?rough? compost goes into a middle bin before moving on to the final ?finished? bin. The triple-bin would be more necessary if you?re processing a large volume of material, or if you want to store your finished compost for a while.

Some Common Composting Questions

??I tried composting, but my pile always smelled bad and attracted flies.?
Flies can actually be beneficial to the composting process, but you can help keep them from becoming a nuisance by turning your compost pile more frequently to make sure that all parts of the pile ?cook? evenly. This will reduce the larvae population, as well as keep odor problems at bay. Food scraps are attractive to flies, especially fatty foods or meat scraps, which should not be put in the pile. Plant-based food scraps, eggshells, etc, should be buried or covered with straw or leaves to deter flies; this will also reduce odors. To keep pests and odors to a minimum, make sure your compost pile is in the recommended size range (from 3x3x3 for a bin to 5x5x5 feet for a heap) so that it generates enough heat to compost quickly and efficiently.

?Why should I compost when I can send my green waste away to be composted elsewhere??
Why pay to have your green waste taken away, and then spend more money on fertilizer, soil, and amendments for your garden, when you can make your own for free? Composting lets you recycle your kitchen scraps and yard waste into a valuable soil amendment and conditioner that you can then use in your own garden, yard, or potted plants. And unlike purchased soil additives and fertilizers, you know exactly what went into your compost ? no toxic gunk or weird chemicals to worry about. From an ecological point of view, composting your own green waste instead of having it hauled away conserves fossil fuels, energy, and money; instead of huge trucks and tractors, all you need is a simple backyard bin, a shovel or pitchfork, and a bit of your time. It?s easy, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly, and nothing beats the satisfaction of turning your scraps and yard waste into something you can use in your own backyard!

?What?s the difference between mulch and compost? ?
Mulch is applied as a top dressing around plants to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, keep the soil temperature cooler in hot weather, and reduce soil erosion and compaction. Mulch usually consists of non-composted, undecayed material ? wood chips, bark, grass clippings and leaves can be used, although compost may be used as a top dressing as well.

Compost is organic matter that has been decayed and decomposed with the help of bacteria, fungi, and other micro-organisms, as well as macro-organisms such as worms, nematodes, and insects. It generally contains a variety of basic nutrients and is used as a soil conditioner to improve soil quality. When mixed into soil, compost improves soil structure, holds nutrients in the soil and makes them more readily available to plants, improves drainage and aeration, and encourages beneficial organism populations.

?What about worm composting? Aren?t worms kind of gross??
Worm composting is ideal for when a small-scale indoor (yes, indoor!) composting system is needed, i.e. for apartment dwellers or those with small yards or limited mobility. It can also be a fun way to observe the composting process up close! You don?t need a high volume of organic material to stock a worm bin, it is tidy and odorless, and worm castings are a fantastic high-quality soil amendment.

For the worm-squeamish folks? first of all, to allay a common fear, worms don?t have teeth. They?re totally harmless, and not slimy at all. Really, though ?? you don?t need to handle the worms; they are generally content to stay hidden in their shredded-paper bedding. They are easy to take care of, too: the worms are not at all ?stinky? or ?yucky,? and you can feed them on your schedule ? once a day to once a week.

Eisenia foetida, the worm-composting worm, is different from your backyard-variety earthworm: they?re leaf-litter-dwellers, so they need a layer of shredded newspaper or the like to live in. They also need a dark bin with good aeration and just enough moisture. Store-bought worm bins can be pricey, but you can easily make your own from a plastic storage bin; check out instructions here. Just make sure that the bin is large enough, not too deep, and ? most importantly ? that it is opaque plastic, not clear. Worms will be much happier in a dark environment.

California's egg-farm law prompts a push for national standards

ATWATER, Calif. ? The gigantic chicken coop at the JS West farm here is big enough to hangar a Boeing 747, and the clucks from 150,000 egg-laying hens make it almost as noisy as one.

Jill Benson, whose family owns the place, is proud of the roomy cages, the clean, ventilated air and, yes, even the never-ending squawks from all those birds.

"They're singing because they're happy," she said.

If that's true, California voters can take some of the credit. Proposition 2, passed by a wide margin in 2008, requires chicken farmers to give their egg-laying birds enough room to stand and spread their wings.

Although farmers have until 2015 to implement the changes, JS West is one of the few to have already installed new cages in an attempt to comply with the law. The Central Valley company, which helped bankroll the campaign against Proposition 2, says it has spent more than $7 million for two barns filled with the new 4-by-12-foot cages, each holding 60 birds.

Like most egg ranches, JS West initially opposed the measure.

"That was our livelihood that was being threatened, and we fought it to the end," Benson said. "When we lost, we saw that California voters were asking for something different. We listened to what that vote said and tried to find a solution."

That solution may now be going national. In a rare alliance, the Humane Society of the United States and egg ranchers have joined forces to lobby for federal legislation that would set national standards for egg ranches similar to those implemented at JS West.

"No question about it: Proposition 2 was a major wake-up call to the entire U.S. egg industry," said Chad Gregory, senior vice president of United Egg Producers, a trade organization that represents most of the nation's egg farmers.

He and others believe the Humane Society support is crucial, since the group was one of the primary supporters of Proposition 2.

"The Humane Society could go into a state and say, 'You either work with us legislatively or we're going to do a ballot initiative in your state,'" Gregory said.

Not everyone favors the approach. If the federal legislation is signed into law, it would create one national standard and invalidate state and local laws, such as Proposition 2. Some animal-rights groups believe California's law could be replaced by a weaker standard. The proposed federal legislation, HR 3798, does not carry the threat of jail time, as Proposition 2 does, and it would prohibit states from banning cages.

It also would give farmers up to 18 years to phase in the changes, which some animal-rights groups say is too long.

"The Humane Society is now trying to undo Proposition 2," said Bradley Miller, director of the Humane Farming Assn. "They've switched sides. They've sold out. They're betraying not only California voters but millions of hens that are locked in horrific conditions."

The Humane Society counters that federal legislation imposing uniform standards nationwide would benefit more chickens than a piecemeal, state-by-state approach ? especially since many states might refuse to pass any such laws at all.

"The federal legislation provides a pathway to give the birds a much better life," said Wayne Pacelle, the Humane Society's president and chief executive. "It's not perfect, but it is a dramatic improvement."

Among other things, the legislation would require that some farmers nearly double the amount of space they provide egg-laying hens. It's now common in some states for hens to be housed in less than 70 square inches ? smaller than a sheet of printer paper.

California egg farmers say Proposition 2 had major flaws that federal standards could correct. For example, the state law does not specify how many square inches they need to provide their birds. Instead, it says hens should be able to "fully extend their limbs or wings, lie down, stand up and turn around."

Last month, Riverside County egg farmer William Cramer filed a federal lawsuit seeking to have Proposition 2 invalidated, saying it's "unconstitutionally vague" because it's not clear about how much space hens should have.

If the law withstands legal challenge, Cramer said, many farmers would shut down rather than pay to install large cages that may not comply with a vague law.

What Turbulence? China Spending On Business Travel May - FSNEP

If you listen to China skeptics, its economy is facing dark clouds and turbulence in the next few years with growth poised to slow. A business travel group today announced a survey that anticipates a markedly different future.

Business travel spending in China will grow by 17% to $202 billion this year and increase another 21% to $245 billion in 2013, according to the Global Business Travel Association.

Growth in manufacturing, trade, jobs, business formation and infrastructure investment will boost that expansion, it said.

China today ranks second in the world in business travel, but is forecast to surpass the US ?as early as? 2015, the association said. A press release didn?t provide forecasts for that year. It projected China GDP growth of 8.2% this year and 8.9% next year.

Last year, US business spending totaled $250 billion versus $182 billion for China, the association said.

Big growth in travel would likely benefit a number of publicly trade Chinese companies, including airlines such as Air China, booking agencies such as Ctrip and Elong, and hotel chains such as China Lodging.

Florida Basketball Recruiting: Damontre Harris Commits To Gators

Billy Donovan, excited to have finally landed a forward. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)

Former South Carolina center Damontre Harris has committed to join Billy Donovan and the Gators, according to ESPN's Dave Telep. Harris will not be eligible to play until 2013-14 because of transfer rules.

Harris chose Florida over Kansas. His mother, for some time, was pushing for him to remain at South Carolina and play for incoming coach Frank Martin. Martin, in a sort of surprising turn of events, didn't elect to block Florida from Harris's list of possible destinations.

Harris gives Florida a legitimate shot blocker and rim protector, something the team has lacked since Joakim Noah departed. As a sophomore at South Carolina, Harris was named to the All-SEC Defensive Team. Depending on what Patric Young does following his junior season (he is expected to turn pro), Harris can either start from Day 1 or provide quality depth off the bench, the former being the most likely scenario.

Florida is still in the running with another transfer, Dorian Finney-Smith, who is down to Florida, Marquette, Georgetown, Iowa State, Villanova, Texas and Alabama. The 6-foot-9 forward, who is pursuing a transfer from Virginia Tech, will likely choose a school close to hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia. Only Gators' Adam Silverstein reports that Florida will continue pursuing Finney-Smith after landing Harris' commitment.

Regardless, by adding Harris, it makes more sense for Florida to move on from Finney-Smith and save room for a prospect in the 2013 class. There are numerous highly-rated forwards with serious interest in Florida in 2013: Austin Nichols, Chris Walker, Mike Young and Troy Williams, to name a few.

Billy Donovan has done a good job recruiting transfers in recent years. He landed Georgetown transfer Vernon Macklin, who started at center for the Gators in 2009-10 and 2010-11 and was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft, and Mike Rosario, who transferred from Rutgers and gave the Gators a scoring threat off the bench in 2011-12.

Samsung Galaxy One Concept: a Great Looking Windows 8 tablet

After talking about Dell?s Windows 8 tablets?a few hours ago it?s time to take a look at a really gorgeous tablet concept, the Samsung Galaxy One. Mind you this is not an actual product, but a design concept sketched by?Laura Hong and Charles de Belizal.

Unlike the other Galaxy tablets powered by Android this one has a clear business orientation thanks to features like integrated projector, which will greatly help those who need to make presentations on the move. You may think that we?re far away from seeing mobile digital projectors on tablets, but Samsung actually has one such smartphone, called Galaxy Beam, so this Galaxy One concept is anything but impossible.

To continue with what the two designers have imagined for the Samsung Windows 8 tablet I have to mention the brushed aluminium body and the two kickstands, one for a lower inclination angle and one for a more elevated position. Oh, and the tablet is pretty sleek when it comes to dimensions:?305x195x14 mm. Will this Galaxy One make the transition from concept to retail product? Most likely not, but that won?t stop me hoping Samsung takes a good look at it and learns something from it.

Tips For Having Fun At A Worldwide Timeshare Promotion | Oregon ...

The most important thing you should realise, is that a worldwide timeshare promotion is being held for one reason only ? to sell you a timeshare! That may not be bad news if you are really interested in finding out all the details before you commit to buying. It may all sound very enticing, but it is wise to remember that nothing is ever free and a really cheap trip to view a resort may be a miserable experience unless you really do intend to buy.

One of the best ways to deal with a timeshare promotion tour if you are undecided, is to just play the game. This way, you can have a bit of fun at the same time as finding out about the resort.

However, be ready for some of the tricks! The rep is not really your ?friend? even if they make out they are. Be prepared for some of them to try and make you feel uncomfortable by their words or actions. They won?t get the sack if you don?t buy and they usually don?t have to feed an army of babies either! It is your right to say ?NO? and don?t let anyone suggest it is not.

Like the double glazing salesman, another trick is to put forward a ?today only? offer. Rubbish!! Deals can be found all the time in terms of the actual cost of the timeshare and any financing interest rates.

When you are with the timeshare promotion reps, keep to soft drinks ? keep the beer and wine bottles firmly plugged until you are on your own. It is common knowledge that we lose our sense of judgment to a degree after a few drinks, so leave the alcohol until you are on your own.

If you are really ready to buy, please do make sure you do your homework on the company and the timeshare resort itself. A few architect drawings are just that, drawings ? you need more sound information and should take independent advice. Also remember that you don?t have to buy new, you can buy timeshare resales and save a lot of money. Again, do your research and be careful.

You may feel that I am being unfair to the timeshare promotion companies. Well, for the record, there certainly are good, reputable businesses to be found. One way to tell is whether they want to check you are able to buy before you go on your tour. It is important to remember that you once in these wonderful locations, you are very vulnerable. Do not let your surroundings influence your head. Step back and think very carefully what you are doing as it?s a big purchase.

Timeshare isn?t for everyone. That said, if it interests you, then a timeshare promotion put on by a reputable timeshare companies are a good idea. If you are undecided but genuinely want to find out more, then you will need to play the game.

Be assured that if you own a worldwide timeshare, it can be a very rewarding experience. Going on a timeshare tour may not be quite as positive though. Discover what you need to know before you go and enjoy your trip.

  • The Transformer Pad 300 is now unlocked, so kindly, let Change.org get back to being used for things that are actually important.
  • $200 Tegra 3 tablet? Yes, please.
  • Tegra 3 will have integrated LTE. By 2013. There's also going to be a swarm of T3 phones coming out.
  • The RAZR and RAZR MAXX and the XOOM 4G will be getting ICS by the end of June. Personally, I'd like to see Moto and Verizon continue playing this cruel, sick joke on XOOM owners, because it's getting to the point where it's funny.
  • HTC has published a list of promises to be broken devices getting ICS and the expected times of release.
  • CyanogenMod 9 is out for more versions of the Tab 10.1 you didn't buy.
  • Device updates: Galaxy S II (T-Mo), Transformer Pad 300.
