Steelers avoid first losing season in nearly decade

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Even at the end of a disappointing season, the Pittsburgh Steelers still know how to beat the Cleveland Browns.

Ben Roethlisberger threw three short touchdown passes, and the Steelers avoided their first losing season in nearly a decade with a 24-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Antonio Brown, Leonard Pope and Plaxico Burress scored for the Steelers (8-8), who mustered enough energy in a meaningless game to turn away the Browns. Pittsburgh's top-ranked defense forced four turnovers as the Steelers won for just the second time in the last six weeks, a slide that knocked them out of the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

Cleveland's third-string quarterback, Thaddeus Lewis, passed for 204 yards with a touchdown and an interception in his first NFL start. But the Browns (5-11) dropped their third straight in what is likely coach Pat Shurmur's final game on the sideline.

The overhaul in Cleveland is already underway. New owner Jimmy Haslam pushed out team president Mike Holmgren shortly after taking charge, and it appears Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert could soon follow Holmgren out the door.

The Browns are 9-23 under Shurmur, the lone highlight a three-game winning streak spanning late November and early December that had some in Cleveland doing the complicated math necessary to put the Browns in the playoffs.

The optimism died just as quickly as it arose. Cleveland came back to earth in a 38-21 whipping at the hands of the Washington Redskins two weeks ago, followed by a blowout loss in Denver. Given a chance to sweep their biggest rivals for the first time in 24 years, the Browns instead lost to the Steelers in the regular-season finale for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

The changes in Pittsburgh won't be so widespread, but with an aging roster and salary cap issues, the Steelers figure to have a busy offseason for a franchise not used to heading home before New Year's Day.

The Steelers insisted they wanted to end a disappointing season with some dignity but hardly appeared interested during most of the first half. Playing in a rare meaningless finale, Pittsburgh sputtered in front of the smallest crowd in Heinz Field's 12-year history. The Steelers needed more than a quarter to pick up a first down as Roethlisberger struggled to stay comfortable.

The Browns, many of them auditioning for jobs next year, were a little livelier but no more effective.

Shurmur, injecting a bit of risk-taking in a tenure filled with playing it safe, called a fake punt from the Cleveland 25 early in the third quarter that Ray Ventrone turned into a 35-yard gain, equaling the team's longest run of the season.

The Browns tied it at 10 a few plays later when Lewis hit Little for a 7-yard touchdown pass.

That about did it for Cleveland. The Steelers responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Roethlisberger hitting Brown for a 9-yard score that put the Steelers back in front.

The Browns never really threatened again, though not for a lack of trying. Wide receiver Travis Benjamin fumbled while trying to fight for extra yardage in the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh's Cortez Allen picked up the ball and returned it to the Cleveland 27. Six plays later, Roethlisberger found Burress for a 12-yard TD.

The veteran wide receiver - brought in over a month ago to shore up a depleted unit - took a pair of bows after his first scoring catch in a year. It was a fitting gesture considering the Steelers soon exited stage right. A season that brimmed with hope after a win over the Giants on Nov. 4 collapsed in a five-week span that included four costly losses.

Political parties bill designed to ?eradicate? Islamic ideology: Adhaalath Party leadership thumbnail

Leaders of the religious conservative Adhaalath Party have claimed legislation passed by parliament last week requiring political parties to have a minimum of 10,000 registered members was a direct attempt to?dissolve?the party.

If the?political parties bill passed on Thursday is signed into law, parties without 10,000 members would have three months to reach the legally required number or face being dissolved.

At a press conference on Saturday, Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla said he suspected that ?black money? from Indian infrastructure company GMR was behind the decision to insert the clause requiring 10,000 members.

Imran said the bill was intended to ?eradicate? Islamic ideology from Maldivian politics and ?defeat? the party?s efforts to oppose alleged attempts to?secularise?the country.

Imran claimed that ?a person with a brain would not deny? that the decision by parliament?s Independent Institutions Committee to raise the prerequisite to 10,000 members from 5,000 at a late stage was made ?because Adhaalath Party would be disqualified at that number.?

He further contended that the party?s recent campaigns to ?reclaim the airport? from the GMR-led consortium and ?reform parliament? was also ?connected to passing that bill.?

?This is a big political and legal challenge [they] placed before Adhaalath Party. The way the political sphere in the country is shaped today, it is very important for a political party like Adhaalath Party to exist,? he said.

Imran also argued that the bill also violated the constitutional principle of equality.

Following preliminary debate in early 2010, the political parties bill was reviewed and finalised by the Independent Institutions Committee on December 10, 2012.

Writing in his personal blog (Dhivehi) in October, Independent Institutions Committee Chair MP Mohamed ?Kutti? Nasheed revealed that ?a clear majority? voted in favour of requiring parties to gain 5000 members before it can be officially registered, and 10,000 members before becoming eligible for state funds.

?When the law is passed, the current registered parties with less than 5,000 members would be given a six month period to reach the figure. If a party fails to reach that figure by the end of the period, the particular party would be dissolved,? Nasheed explained.

However, the minimum number of members was later raised to 10,000 and the period shortened to three months before the draft legislation was presented to the Majlis floor for Thursday?s vote.

The political parties bill was passed with 64 votes in favour and four against.

According to figures from the Elections Commission (EC), Adhaalath Party has 5,881 as of December 27. In October 2011, the party had 6,140 members.

Only four parties out of 16 registered in the country have more than 10,000 members, including the formerly ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and government-aligned Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Jumhooree Party (JP).

Speaking at yesterday?s press conference, Islamic Minister Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, chief spokesperson of the party, dismissed the notion that the minimum requirement of 10,000 members was approved for economic reasons as political parties were provided funds from the state budget.

Shaheem criticised provisions in recently-passed legislation on MPs? privileges guaranteeing retirement pensions after one term as well as overseas medical treatment for MPs? family members as untenable expenses by the state.

?When a MP serves a five-year term, the state has to pay him till he goes to the grave. And [the state] has to take care of him and his family,? Shaheem said.

If state funding for small political parties was too costly, Shaheem argued that a monthly pay of more than MVR 12,000 for island councillors was excessive as well.

Five-member councils in islands with very small populations had ?nothing at all to do,? he claimed.

Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muiz meanwhile said that the membership clause was intended to get rid of the religious conservative party due to its efforts ?on behalf of Islam??in recent years.

Muiz referred to the Adhaalath?Party?s successful campaign against proposed regulations to authorise sale of alcohol in city hotels as well as its?opposition to making Dhivehi and Islam non-compulsory subjects in higher secondary education.?He claimed that the party also put a stop to former President Mohamed Nasheed?s attempts to strengthen ties with Israel and??bring Jews? to allow them to ?exert influence in the country?.

Muiz, who also serves as the Adhaalath Party?s secretary general, called on ?all citizens who love Islam? to sign up for the party.

Sheikh Ilyas Hussain, head of the party?s religious scholars council, meanwhile claimed that efforts to get rid of Adhaalath Party were intended to ?erase? Islam from the Maldives and ?spread secular activities in society.?

Following the parliament?s vote on the political parties bill, Adhaalath Party Sheikh Mohamed Iyash wrote on the party?s website last week that it was ?essential for religious people to have political power given the state of the Maldives.?

?Religion and politics cannot be separated. Calls by some secular individuals to separate religion and politics are dangerous,? he wrote in response to a purported question regarding the ?Shariah judgment? on signing for Adhaalath Party.

?Their [secular individuals'] intention is for religious scholars to not criticise any affairs of state and just stay in mosques praying and giving religious advice,? he wrote, adding that it was compulsory upon all Muslims to ?enjoin good and forbid evil.?

A ?religious political party? in the Maldives was therefore ?necessary and obligatory,? he contended.

?Adhaalath Party is the only party formed to protect religion in the country. To say that all other political parties were formed for worldly purposes would not be demeaning them,? he added.

Sheikh Iyash wrote that it was ?a big responsibility of every Maldivian citizen to find a way to maintain Adhaalath Party in existence.?

The Adhaalath Party has announced that it would hold a rally on Thursday night to launch a recruitment drive to increase membership.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Bobo has a method: Cocaine gets him through the day, when he cruises with a wheelbarrow around a slum on Rio's west side, sorting through trash for recyclables to sell. At night, he turns the day's profit into crack.

"Sometimes I don't sleep at all; I'm up 24 hours," says Bobo, a former soldier who doesn't use his given name for safety reasons. "I work to support my addiction, but I only use crack at night. That drug takes my mind away. I lose all notion of what I'm doing."

Bobo says balancing crack with cocaine keeps him working and sane. On the shantytown's streets, life can be hell: Addicts unable to strike Bobo's precarious balance use crack day and night, begging, stealing, prostituting themselves, and picking through trash to make enough for the next hit. For them, there's no going home, no job, nothing but the drug.

With a boom in crack use over the past decade, Brazilian authorities are struggling to stop the drug's spread, sparking a debate over the legality and efficiency of forcibly interning users. Brazil today is the world's largest consumer of both cocaine and its crack derivative, according to the Federal University of Sao Paolo. About 6 million adults, or 3 percent of Brazilians, have tried cocaine in some form.

Rio de Janeiro has taken the lead in trying to help the burgeoning number of users with an approach that city leaders call proactive, but critics pan as unnecessarily aggressive. As of May 2011, users living in the streets have been scooped up in pre-dawn raids by teams led by the city's welfare department in conjunction with police and health care workers. By Dec. 5, 582 people had been picked up, including 734 children.

The sight is gut-wrenching. While some people go meekly, many fight, cry, scream out in desperation in their altered states. Once they're gone, their ratty mattresses, pans, sweaters and few other possessions are swept up by a garbage removal company.

Adults can't be forced to stay in treatment, and most leave the shelters within three days. But children are kept in treatment against their will or returned to parents if they have a family. In December, 119 children were being held in specialized treatment units.

Demand for crack has boomed in recent years and open-air "cracolandias," or "crack lands," popped up in the urban centers of Rio and Sao Paulo, with hundreds of users gathering to smoke the drug. The federal government announced in early 2012 that more than $2 billion would be spent to fight the epidemic, allotting money to train health care workers, buy thousands of hospital and shelter beds, and create transitional centers for recovering users.

Mobile street units stationed near cracolandias are among the most important and visible aspects of the government's approach. The units, housed in metal containers, bring doctors, nurses, therapists and social workers to the areas where users concentrate. Slowly, by offering health care and other help, the units' workers gain the trust of users and refer them to treatment centers.

Studies suggest the approach can work: 47 percent of the crack users surveyed in Sao Paulo said they'd welcome treatment, according to the Federal University of Sao Paulo study.

Ethel Vieira, a psychologist on the raid team, thinks their persistence is paying off.

"Initially, they'd run away, react aggressively, throw rocks," she said of users. "Now most of them understand our intention is to help, to give them a chance to leave the street and to connect with the public health network."

Human rights groups object to the forced commitment of children, saying treatment delivered against the will of patients is ineffective. They also oppose the sweeps, which they describe as violent.

"There are legal procedures that must be followed and that are not being followed. This goes against the law and is unconstitutional," Margarida Pressburguer, head of the Human Rights Commission for Brazil's Association of Attorneys, said during a debate last year.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes suggested in October that the city would start forcing adults into treatment. "A crack addict isn't capable of making decisions," Paes said from the Jacarezinho shantytown in the week after police stormed the area and seized control of what was then Rio's largest cracolandia.

The Rio state Attorney General's Office responded by telling city officials "the compulsory removal of adults living in the streets has no legal foundation." It said adults can be committed only when they become a danger to themselves or others and outpatient treatment options have run out.

"They give us a place to sleep, food, clothes, everything," said Bobo. "I've been picked up by the city and I liked it. They are doing this for our good."

But even as Bobo endorsed the city's approach, a friend was stepping over to the drug stand for more cocaine. Bobo asked for $5 worth of drugs ? cocaine for now, crack for later. Then he rolled up a bill and dumped a small mound of white powder in his palm for snorting.

With a nose full of cocaine, he set off, ready for another day.

Scientists Turn To Unsaturated Fats For Healthier Ice Cream

Cover Image: January 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Scientists are experimenting with unsaturated fats for a rich but less artery-clogging dessert

Ice cream is a complex, three-phase food system in which ice (solid), air (gas) and unfrozen water (liquid) coexist. Much that makes ice cream an indulgence derives from its relatively high fat content, which can range from 10 to 18 percent in premium varieties. In addition to its role in taste and flavor development, fat is crucial to ice cream's texture. No wonder, then, that most low-fat varieties fail to offer the same taste sensation.

Lately food scientists have found clever ways to experiment with unsaturated fats aiming to bring consumers the full satisfaction of ice cream with fewer of the health consequences associated with saturated fats. Solid fat builds structure in ice cream via partial coalescence, which occurs when two fat droplets collide and fuse only ?at their hip,? remaining distinguishable from each other. The fusion is mediated by crystals that protrude from the surface of the spherical droplets?imagine the thorns of a prickly pear?that pierce neighboring droplets as they collide. These droplets then aggregate and deposit onto the surface of air bubbles and stabilize the frozen foam. In this way, partial coalescence enables ice cream to taste creamier, hold its shape and melt more slowly.

Given that unsaturated fats are liquid, the original thought was that they would not be good candidates to make ice cream less of a sin. Recent research, however, has the skeptics thinking twice. New studies led by Douglas Goff of the University of Guelph in Ontario suggest that plateletlike or needlelike droplets (as opposed to spheres) that contain 40 to 60 percent unsaturated fats are very effective at building structure in ice cream. Such fats can be blends of any highly unsaturated oil (such as high-oleic sunflower or canola oil) and saturated fats such as coconut oil or cocoa butter. Platelets formed only when Goff's team added commonly used unsaturated emulsifiers, such as glycerol monooleate, which are thought to force the fat crystals to grow preferentially in one dimension, hence generating the needlelike profile. Because of their shape, the amount of fat needed to create a stable frozen foam (via partial coalescence) decreases. This opens up the possibility for low(er) fat, creamy, slow-melting ice cream.

US embassy evacuated in Central African Republic

A Centrafrican military convoy drives on a road going to Sibut, 114 miles north of Bangui, the country's capital on Saturday. Sibut was seized by the rebel coalition Seleka.

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

As rebels approached the capital of the embattled Central African Republic, the U.S. shuttered its embassy and moved out its ambassador and about 40 diplomats, the Guardian of London reported.

?This decision is solely due to concerns about the security of our personnel and has no relation to our continuing and long-standing diplomatic relations with the (Central African Republic),? read a statement posted Friday to the embassy?s website.

The Seleka rebels seized the city of Sibut about 114 miles from Bangui, the capital, a government official confirmed to The Associated Press. Sibut, a transportation hub, fell to the rebels without a shot fired because the government army had pulled back on Friday.

The rebels accuse President Fran?ois Boziz? of not meeting terms of a 2007 peace agreement, according to The New York Times. Meanwhile, Boziz?, who grabbed power in 2003 and has since been twice elected president, has pleaded for international help, appealing to the French in particular. The French government, the former colonial power, has refused to step in.

The Central African Republic, with a population of about 4.4 million, is landlocked between other politically stable countries at the heart of the continent has a population. President Barack Obama sent about 100 special operations troops to the region in April to hunt down Joseph Kony, the rebel leader of the notorious Lord?s Resistance Army and the subject of a widely viewed, 30-minute documentary, Kony 2012.

Related: US and Ugandan soldiers go after Joseph Kony

Doctors Without Borders said in a statement this week that clashes between rebels and the army have forced residents to leave their homes ? disrupting their missions to bring medical care to the region.

?This situation could have fatal consequences for people already struggling to find care after a decade of chronic armed violence had severely limited the country?s health system,? the statement said. Doctors Without Borders, which has had a presence in the region since 1997, says that malaria is the main focus of its projects there.

Enoch Nodl-ya, a nurse anesthetist for Doctors Without Borders, provided a medical perspective on other issues faced:

For the last 10 years the population has endured the regular presence and attacks from armed men in this region. People are scared and flee rapidly into the bush. As a consequence, many women give birth in the fields without any assistance and most sick or wounded are hesitant to receive medical assistance, scared of possible violence in the populated areas. When the violence stops, we often see patients coming in an advance stage of their diseases.

Contraceptive mandate blocked in Illinois case

By Jonathan Stempel, Reuters

A divided federal appeals court has temporarily barred the U.S. government from requiring an Illinois company to obtain insurance coverage for contraceptives, as mandated under the 2010 healthcare overhaul, after the owners objected on religious grounds.

More than 40 lawsuits are challenging a requirement in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that requires most for-profit companies to offer workers insurance coverage for contraceptive drugs and devices and other birth control methods.

Friday's 2-1 order by a panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago in favor of Cyril and Jane Korte was the second by a federal appeals court to temporarily halt enforcement against people who said it violated their faith, said Edward White, a lawyer for the Roman Catholic couple.

The 7th Circuit suggested that the couple's legal challenge might eventually prevail.

Its order came two days after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor declined to block the provision's enforcement against companies controlled by the family of Oklahoma City billionaire David Green.

The U.S. Department of Justice, which had defended the contraceptives provision, did not immediately respond on Saturday to a request for comment.

The Kortes, who own the construction firm Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, had sought to drop a health insurance plan for 20 non-unionized workers that included coverage for contraception, and substitute a different plan consistent with their faith.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

But the Obama administration's healthcare law did not allow the change, and the Kortes said that violated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA.

In issuing an injunction, the 7th Circuit majority said the Kortes had established a reasonable likelihood of success on the merits of their RFRA claim, and that the government had not yet justified the apparent "substantial burden" on their religious exercise.

The court also said the couple had established irreparable harm, because absent an injunction they would have to choose between maintaining insurance coverage they considered inappropriate or facing substantial financial penalties.

"Business owners who are objecting to the mandate are not objecting to people using contraceptives, but that they have to arrange for and pay for it," White, a lawyer with the American Center for Law and Justice, said in a phone interview. "The federal government shouldn't tell business owners they have to contract to buy what they see as immoral services and goods."

Judges Joel Flaum and Diane Sykes comprised the 7th Circuit majority.

High court declines to block contraceptives coverage in health care law

Judge Ilana Rovner dissented. She said the Kortes were "multiple steps" removed from the contraceptives services because it was their company paying for the coverage, and because it would be a worker, her doctor and the insurer involved in the decisions about the services and their funding.

The Kortes' case is expected to continue in the 7th Circuit.

Neither the 7th Circuit nor Sotomayor ruled on the merits of their respective cases. The legal standard for obtaining an injunction from the Supreme Court is much higher.

The case is Korte et al v. Sebelius, 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 12-3841.

Solomon Black | Writelink Creative Writing Challenges

Late one Christmas Eve, the Reverend Solomon Black was at his desk composing another letter to the Bishop, once more asking that he be removed from the parish of St Mary?s-by-the-Way and provided with a parish better suited to his genteel ways and higher education. His missive had reached a critical point were the concepts of begging and reasonable argument threatened to collide and so, wishing to couch his words carefully and present a favourable impression, he had broken from his work and stepped over to the window to consider how best to press his case. It was then, in the light of the full moon, he saw them. Seven snowmen, each the height of a small child, huddled together in the corner of the churchyard reserved for paupers. Moments later, eyes blazing, he wrenched open his study door and burst into the vicarage hallway like a galleon in a storm.

?Mrs Bailey,? he bellowed. ?Bring me the shovel. I have urgent need of it this very instant.?

Mrs Bailey, wiped her floured hands on her apron and grabbed the required implement from beside the back door, where it was kept for the purpose of clearing snow from the path to the coal bunker, and took it to her employer who snatched it rudely from her hands.

?Seven of them, Mrs Bailey, as usual,? he snarled. ?One for each of those copper headed Flanagan boys. Damn them, Mrs Bailey, damn them all.?

Mrs Bailey shook her head. ?Really sir, you oughtn?t speak ill of the dead like that, you being a gentleman of the cloth and all. Besides, it was dreadful what happened to them boys. Anyway sir, they?re most likely the work of the village folk up to their pranks. Why work yourself up like this. They?re only snowmen after all. What harm can they do??

The Reverend?s face, already red, turned crimson.

?Pranks be damned, Mrs Bailey. They are a damnable desecration I say, and as long as I?m the shepherd of this godless flock, they shall have no place in my churchyard.?

A short while later, shovel in hand, he was crunching through the snow towards the church. The cold reached under his thin threadbare coat and very quickly a damp chill felt its way through his worn out boots, reminding him that a bigger parish would perhaps provide a bigger stipend. His tenure at St Mary?s had been nothing but vexation piled upon vexation. For that he blamed the late Alice Flanagan and her seven damned brats.

?Their burial in consecrated ground would be an offence to God,? he had told the Bishop before the funeral. ?Must I remind Your Grace that she took her own life as well as those of her cursed offspring. Godless sins sir. Godless I say.?

The bishop disagreed.

?If anything Solomon, the sin is ours. Alice Flanagan was a troubled woman with no husband and seven mouths to feed. She smothered her children with a pillow one by one as they slept, rather than spend another day watching them being slowly taken by disease and hunger. This parish stood by and did nothing.?

So Alice and her children were buried in a common grave in the paupers? corner of the graveyard where nobody visited and only weeds grew. There was no headstone and no one was ever seen to visit them or place flowers. Yet every Christmas Eve, seven snowmen would mysteriously appear around the grave. Each with a head adorned with torn strips of orange rags to represent flaming red hair, for which the children had been famous, and stones wrapped in green foil for their once bright emerald eyes. And every year an enraged Reverend Black would smash them down with the shovel from the rectory.

The lynch-gate squeaked loudly as he pushed his way through into the churchyard. ?Damn that worthless Sexton,? he muttered. ?How many times must he be told to fix something??

Something tugged at the hem of his coat. He spun round, shovel raised, ready to brain any would be footpad. There was no one there, though he fancied he heard a child?s brief laughter from somewhere in the shadows.

?Show yourself you cowardly little wretch,? he called. When no one revealed themselves, he lowered the shovel but remained alert. The uneasy notion that he was being watched had descended upon him and he could not shake it off. As he peered into the gloom, the full moon crept behind a drifting cloud and the world was plunged into darkness. He regretted not bringing a lantern. The hairs on the back of his neck where rising and the safe haven of the vicarage seemed a thousand leagues away. It occurred to him that Mrs Bailey would be setting out his supper by now: a slice or two of roast mutton and some cheese. A pot of fine ale too, he fancied. His stomach rumbled.

Damn this foolish imagination he told himself and continued his advance through the churchyard until he reached the Flanagans? unmarked resting place, where he wasted no time in setting about his business.

?The devil take you all,? he growled, planting his feet firmly and prepared to strike the first snowman with his shovel, but before he could bring its heavy blade crashing down a single snowball flew out of the night and exploded in the middle of his chest. Once again, he heard the sound of a child laughing. He brandished his shovel angrily at the night and called out.

?Be off with you, whoever you are, or you?ll feel my anger. Be off, I say. Be off.?

In response, a deluge of snowballs ensued accompanied by the sound of more children laughing. In a wild rage, he advanced into the darkness to where he supposed his assailants might be but as he stepped forward the snowballs began to feel less soft. Something hard struck him on the forehead. The missiles were no longer made of watery snow. They were now made of ice and as hard as rocks.

?Desist this instant,? he protested, only to be answered by a hail of ice lumps striking him on the head and torso. His mouth began to fill with warm, salty blood and his body began to sway as dizziness took hold. The world was spinning and the sound of children laughing grew louder. The shovel fell from his hands and his legs buckled.

He was on his back, still conscious enough to look up and see seven snowmen dancing around him like little Indians. As they danced, the snow that formed them melted away to reveal a child beneath: seven white faced boys with flaming red hair and eyes as green as emeralds. There too, was Alice Flanagan, kneeling over him, jaundiced eyes glaring from hollowed sockets, hair matted in damp earth, and her black lips parted in a wild jagged toothed grin as she leant slowly forward to press an old soiled pillow hard against his face. The very last thing the Reverend Solomon Black felt was seven pairs of tiny hands holding him down and his heart beating wildly in his chest.

Then there was nothing.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? What a December to remember for the Golden State Warriors.

Stephen Curry had 22 points and nine assists, David Lee scored 20 points and the Warriors whipped the short-handed Boston Celtics 101-83 on Saturday night to close out a memorable month.

Golden State (21-10) finished December with a 12-4 record and has at least 20 wins before New Year's Day for the first time since 1980.

"What more is there to say?" Lee said. "Happy New Year."

First-round pick Harrison Barnes added 15 points and eight rebounds to help Golden State build a 20-point lead in the second quarter and cruise most of the way. The Warriors tied the 1961-62 team ? when the franchise was still in Philadelphia ? with 12 wins in December.

"The bottom line is it's been a great year for us," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "2012 has been real good to us. We will put it behind us and now look forward to doing great things in 2013."

The Celtics, meanwhile, are hardly ringing in the new year in style.

Courtney Lee had 18 points and five rebounds starting in place of Rajon Rondo, who was a late scratch for Boston because of a bruised right thigh and hip. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Rondo will be a game-time decision at the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night, but he was far more concerned about the team's horrendous shooting and offensive flow.

Paul Pierce finished with 13 points on 4-for-20 shooting, Jason Terry scored 13 points on 6-for-19 shooting and both were taken out with 4:19 remaining and the game well out of reach.

The Celtics (14-15) have lost six of eight to fall below .500 for the first time in almost two months. Combined with Thursday night's 106-77 loss at the Los Angeles Clippers, Boston has been outscored by 47 points the last two games.

"We got to figure out who we want to be," Pierce said. "Do we want to be a defense-first team? If we're not going to be a defensive team, we got to be a better offensive team. It's got to be something. We still got to find our way."

After beating the Philadelphia 76ers at home Friday night, the Warriors continued to pound Eastern Conference competition. Golden State outshot Boston 51 to 36 percent from the floor, the lowest an opponent has shot against them all season.

The Warriors also had a season-high with 10 blocked shots ? five by rookie Festus Ezeli ? and improved to 13-2 against the East this season.

And this one wasn't even close.

Curry shook off the double teams the Celtics threw his way on most pick-and-rolls and found Lee and others for easy dunks. At one point, the Warriors scored 11 straight and later took a 19-9 lead that got Rivers ranting and raving at his players to pick up the intensity.

After the Celtics started to close the gap, Jackson switched to the three-guard lineup of Curry, Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack. The trio shredded Boston's depleted backcourt, with Curry and Thompson each connecting from beyond the arc to cap a 21-7 run that gave Golden State a 50-30 lead late in the second quarter.

"This was huge," Curry said. "You're just trying to keep the momentum going."

The Celtics simply had no rhythm offensively and no pressure defensively without Rondo, the three-time All-Star point guard who had started the first 24 games this season. Rivers said Rondo was hurt at the Clippers but doesn't think the injury is anything serious.

Pierce's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter highlighted a brief burst that brought Boston to 78-70. The highlights for the Celtics ended there, with the Warriors' swarming Boston defensively to build back a 22-point lead.

"We got to keep working at this," said Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, who had 6 points and three rebounds in 23 minutes. "This is where you start to see who's with you. This is when you see who really wants it, who really wants to get down and work and grind for it. We're about to find it out."

NOTES: SG Leandro Barbosa is expected to rejoin the Celtics at Sacramento after missing four straight games for personal reasons. ... Boston fell to 5-10 on the road. ... Raiders WR Jacoby Ford was among those in attendance.

The available Windows 8?desktop editions include?Core, Pro and Enterprise.?As long as you have a?valid license key that covers the edtion that you want to shift to, then this tool may help you out. It looks like I?ll be giving it a try once my new hardware arrives, since I still can?t seem to get access to the Windows 8 Pro source bits.

The arrival of my new Dell precision laptop, with?Windows 7 Pro installed,?has been delayed due to a backlog in customs. While I wait, I?ve been looking for my own workaround to the Windows 8 download issue that I posted the other day. I was able to locate?Windows 8 Enterprise source files, but I want to install it on my personal laptop. In order to make the install legitimate, I need to use?the Windows 8 Pro key that I?recently?purchased. It looks like this tool?called UpDown8?will allow me to achieve my goal. UpDown8?is supposed to perform?all of the required registry?changes and then you must rerun the Windows 8 installation setup. During the setup process a valid license key will be requested.

2012 Year in Review: We're Still Here | ARGNet: Alternate Reality ...

December 29, 2012 ? By Michael Andersen in Features, News?

argnet

Over the years, more than a few alternate reality games, transmedia storytelling projects, and advertising campaigns have warned that December 2012 would mark the end of the world. That shouldn?t come as much of a surprise: you can?t get much higher stakes than saving the world, and fighting against an ancient prophecy with its own pre-existing mythos (however misinformed) can add mystique to a narrative.

In 2009, the alternate reality game? The Institute for Human Continuity?reportedly sparked?hundreds of letters?to NASA?s Astrobiology Institute from people earnestly worried about the coming Apocalypse.?Closer to the date in question, Funcom?s The Secret World offered a series of six missions intended to forestall the End of Days both inside and outside the game. Even Old Spice got in on the harbinger of doom act, using points from six increasingly ridiculous flash games to power a laser cutter that slowly etched additional time onto the Mayan calendar for their absurdist campaign, Old Spice Saves the World.

Proclamations of impending disaster weren?t limited to global catastrophe this year, with Fourth Wall Studios? Elan Lee adding his voice to the chorus?claiming that ARGs are dead at the StoryWorld Conference in Los Angeles.?And yet, 2012 was in many ways a renaissance for alternate reality games and transmedia storytelling, as new sources of funding arise for a thriving community of developers. What follows is a closer look at some of the major events in alternate reality gaming for the year.

A Quick Look at the Industry

The most heartening development of the year is the growing influence of local groups of transmedia developers. Transmedia LA turned to Kickstarter to raise almost $10,000 to develop the alternate reality game Miracle Mile Paradox?to give its members hands-on experience creating a game from start to finish, calling back to the ?training ARG? Orbital Colony. In New York City, StoryCode?s focus was on a more condensed Story Hackathon. Inspired by Storycode?s hackathon, Transmedia SF ran its own Transmedia Jam. The hackathon model will be moving to Los Angeles in 2013, opening even more opportunities.

Established institutions in transmedia funding and support like?Power to the Pixel?and Sundance?s?New Frontier?are ramping up their efforts to provide direction and funding for the field, while new entrants like the?Tribeca Film Institute, the?National Endowment for the Humanities, and the?Canadian Film Centre?have been quick to follow with a variety of programs for prospective developments. On the legal front, Stitch Media?managed to prevail?in a Nova Scotia Supreme Court case revolving around the definition of interactivity for new media projects.

The list of transmedia storytelling platforms available for public consumption grew longer this year, as teams are increasingly viewing the technological infrastructures developed for projects as potential revenue generators. The Shadow Gang introduced Galahad, the platform developed in conjunction with Michael Grant?s alternate reality game for his Bzrk?book series, while Failbetter Games released its StoryNexus platform into the wild, after using it to produce games like?Echo Bazaar?(now known as Fallen London)?and The Night Circus. The year saw the official launch of Fourth Wall Studios? RIDES platform. The company recently laid off the majority of its staff?to shift the company?s focus away from production, redoubling efforts on developing the platform for licensing to partners.?These new platforms join existing alternatives like Social Samba and Conducttr as potential tools for content management.

Return of the Video Game

Alternate reality games like I Love Bees and Last Call Poker serving as promotional vehicles for traditional video games in the past. But few have tried to replicate Electronic Arts? ambitious attempt at fusing video game and transmedia experiences, Majestic. ?Sony returned to that concept?in 2009 with?PlayStation Xi, a console-based alternate reality game that created a game within the PlayStation Home virtual world.

This month, PlayStation returned to their familiar stomping grounds with a sequel,?Xi Continuum. Unlike its free-to-play precursor, players are asked to pay a nominal fee ($8.99) for the full Xi Continuum?experience. The return of?Xi?is one of many video game experiences that seek to directly interweave transmedia elements into the gameplay experience.?For Funcom?s The Secret World, PC-based gameplay is riddled with puzzle missions that require players to search for outside information to piece together clues scattered throughout the MMORPG?s world. These puzzle missions are punctuated by a series of alternate reality games that have?stretched back for years before the video game?s launch and continue today.

Alt-Minds looks to bring mission-based gameplay to a multi-lingual audience, offering versions of the game in French, English, German, and Spanish. The game frames the investigation around a web series. European players can turn to the game?s smartphone and tablet app to use augmented reality to hunt down additional clues at real world locations. Google is also making inroads into the augmented reality gaming market with its?Niantic Project alternate reality game. As a conspiracy-riddled narrative unfolds on the Niantic Project website, players across the globe battle to capture and maintain portals through the ARG?s augmented reality app, Ingress. Hacking portals in the augmented reality app periodically drops media files that advance the narrative, while codes and clues hidden within the narrative updates on the game?s website provide players with additional items and experience for the augmented reality game.

A Surge in Television and Movies

Syfy is looking to bridge the gap between video games and television with its ambitious upcoming project, Defiance. Syfy plans to have events in the online MMO shooter game influence the television series and vice versa, particularly as the endeavor, rumored to cost as much as $100 million, moves into its second season. Initial assets are beginning to proliferate online in anticipation of the show and game?s April premiere, offering a glimpse into the show?s post-apocalyptic universe.

Most transmedia endeavors in the realm of television and movies in 2012 were more modest in scope, seeking to offer curious viewers an amuse-bouche before the main event. For Cinemax?s show Hunted, the amuse-bouche took the form of a five-step job application to work at Byzantium Security, a company with the provocative slogan ?We?re not for everyone. Just the 1% that matters.? Sony created a similar teaser for its Skyfall campaign that challenged visitors to complete a text adventure as their application to MI6. Tim Kring tried a different tact with his fragmented web series?Daybreak 2012, which offered a thematic sequel to the show Touch that?explored the show?s mysterious ?doda? before the show?s second season. Investigation Discovery even created a condensed murder mystery?with a twist ending based on torrid love affair to promote?a reality series hosted by soap opera veteran Susan Lucci.

Even some of the larger movie-themed experiences of 2012 like the viral campaigns for?Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises focused on periodic teasers designed to make a big splash, like eccentric trillionaire Peter Weyland?s fictional TED Talk in 2023 for Prometheus and deaddrops containing Peter Parker?s school supplies and Spidey-shoes as part of Mark of the Spider-Man.

Social Samba served as the platform for a handful of the year?s more time-intensive extended television experiences, lead by USA Networks? Suits Recruits. The platform had previously been used for online extensions like Psych?s Hashtag Killer game and MTV?s Teen Wolf: The Hunt, but pushed the platform to new heights. Hearkening back to the Sherlock Holmes game 221B?s team-based gameplay, Suits Recruits required players to assume the role of either a paralegal or legal assistant at Pearson Hardman, share information with their compatriots to crack the case, and navigate the treacherous waters of office politics.

A Return to the Web Series

While traditional television and movies eased away from full-fledged alternate reality games in 2012, the web series community moved to fill the void. Leading the charge was Fourth Wall Studios with the official unveiling of the company?s RIDES platform through a dizzying array of shows, headlined by the Emmy Award-winning Dirty Work. As opposed to aiming for interactivity with the platform, it focused on adding additional layers of multimedia touchpoints to serve as a surround-sound of immersion. Stories ranged from the intensely dark science fiction show Flare to more lighthearted fare like the home shopping channel comedy RVC.

Guidestones was another platform-driven play aimed at rethinking the consumption of web video content: the story was designed to play out through a series of short videos emailed to subscribers at regular intervals, encouraging players to tackle the puzzles contained within in a fixed period of time. With a narrative centered around the very real Georgia Guidestones and a new season coming in 2013, the series matches its novel delivery system with an engaging story.

Tom Hanks also tested the transmedia waters through Tap Joint,?a perplexingly obscure alternate reality game that promoted the animated web series Electric City through a virtual telegraph machine that features prominently in the series. One of the game?s most innovative features was using the mobile version of the website as an instruction manual for the desktop version, a functional application of the narrative possibilities showcased in Randall Munroe?s April Fool?s joke on xkcd this year. Rounding out the big budget celebrity forays into the web series space,?Anthony Zuiker paired up with Yahoo and Norton Anti-Virus to produce?Cybergeddon, providing viewers of the chance to?team up with the show?s cyber-sleuths.

Some of the most engaging experiments in transmedia storytelling of 2012 came out of the established YouTube creator community. To support MyMusic, an over-the-top comedy about a radio station run by the physical manifestations of music genres, Benny and Rafi Fine started a series of weekly shows that have effectively brought the show?s fictional radio show to life. MyMusic serves as wish fulfillment for everyone who secretly fantasized about listening to the stations featured in WKRP in Cincinnati and NewsRadio. And then, there?s the Lizzie Bennet Diaries: a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice spearheaded by Bernie Su and Hank Green that somehow manages to find endearing qualities in the the most unlikeable characters of the source material. It?s a rare Pride and Prejudice adaptation that keeps me coming back to find out what?s going on in the lives of ?Ricky? Collins and Lydia Bennet.

The Indie ARG Space

It?s getting increasingly difficult to draw the line between the indie space for alternate reality gaming and their better financed compatriots. Any one of the games I mention here (and many that I don?t) could easily claim I mislabeled them. Take, for instance, ZED.TO, a Toronto-based alternate reality game that held a series of elaborate live events that offer live theatrical experiences that rival many of the outrageous stunts pulled off during Tim Kring?s Conspiracy for Good. Similarly, the quality of the radio drama featured in the We Are the Earthborne ARG leaves me nostalgic for the halcyon days of audio dramas. I can?t even begin to make sense of TVTropes.org?s recently concluded alternate reality game, The Wall Will Fall, but its almost perverse complexity riddled with meta-references and in-jokes seems perfectly tailored to the community?s near-herculean organizational prowess. Alternet Reality delves into the horror genre through intense, live streaming challenges where the fictional characters? fates depends on players? ability to crack the case in real time.

The independent ARG that stuck with me the most this year, however, made no attempt to create the illusion of being anything but an indie project. On a lark, ARGNet founder Steve Peters announced an insta-ARG experiment parody of World Without Oil dubbed?World Without Helium. The Mega Hard Wood Group emerged from that framework, exploring the serious topic of a world facing a helium shortage in the most whimsical manner possible. The game?s protagonist William Sawtooth III decided that if corporations can be people, people should be able to function as corporations as well. So Sawtooth sold shares in his personhood, putting his life at the whims of his shareholders. The game only ran for two weeks, but every day brought a new relatively simple yet ridiculous challenge delivered through a podcast to recover William Sawtooth?s shares from the Mega Wood Group board of directors that still managed to emerge organically from the story. Other games like Work With No Pants?also embraced the absurdist aesthetic to great effect.

Persistence of the Serious Game

One of the most powerful serious games of 2011 returned to the USC campus this fall. Reality Ends Here was designed as a way of encouraging USC?s freshman film students to continue the practical experimentation and creative spark that got students admitted to the School of Cinematic Arts in the first place outside the classroom context. The project?s inaugural year won Indiecade?s Impact Award. Reality Ends Here returned to meet a new crop of incoming students this fall. The year?s projects included everything from a massive science fiction supercut remix, vignettes from an Israeli soldier?s struggles in the military, and a film created using Google Maps in place of a camera.

Education was a popular topic for serious ARGs this year, with?World Without Oil creator Ken Eklund returned to the space for?Ed Zed Omega, a game about high school dropouts with a twist. Instead of using Ed Zed Omega to encourage students to work with the current educational system, the game follows six fictional teens to address what steps high school drop-outs take when they make that decision.?ARGs were even used to promote attending Easter services for Long Hollow Baptist Church, through the campaign Who is Phillip Randoll. A light puzzle-driven narrative was used alongside out of home advertisements to build up anticipation for church?s Easter drama, The Fortunate Death of Phillip Randoll.

Books and Puzzle Challenges

For the book publishing industry, 2012 was dominated by a continuation of existing projects. 39 Clues continues to push through its second series, Yomi Ayeni?s Clockwork Watch steampunk graphic novel shipped,?and the upcoming transmedia series The Karada has been teasing its eventual release with the Wattpad story All Your Fates. Eli Horowitz, author of the recently solved puzzle book The Clock Without a Face, recently released The Silent History, a book designed exclusively for iDevices that can unlock location-specific stories for its readers. For non-fiction resources, 2012 saw the publication of Andrea Phillips??Creator?s Guide to Transmedia Storytelling?and Tyler Weaver?s?Comics for Film, Games, and Animation.?There are also a number of transmedia book experiences set to come out in 2013,?including Thomas Greanias thriller The Alignment: Federal City and Mark Staufer?s lucid dreaming exploration The Numinous Place.

Oddly enough, some of the most exciting news items relating to the publishing world are tied to already published books. At ARGFest this year, it was announced that there are four meta puzzles hidden in Dave Szulborski?s book, This Is Not A Game?that have remained hidden within the book for over seven years. Ernest Cline also revealed that his book?Ready Player One contained meta-puzzles that mirrored the novel?s plot, and offered up a 1981 Delorean as the prize for the first to complete a series of three increasingly difficult challenges. First, competitors needed to find a secret room in an emulated Atari game created for the challenge. Next, puzzlers had to collect 80?s-themed items in Richard Garrett?s Facebook game, Ultimate Collector. Finally, everyone to clear the first two challenges were asked to set a new world record on one of six classic video games. Within eight days, the contest?s winner set a new world record on Joust, and Cline gave the Delorean away on G4TV.

A handful of other major puzzles hunts concluded their multi-year runs. For?The Clock Without a Face, the last of twelve clock faces was located after players spent two years scouring the book for clues. No one solved the puzzle behind the series of puppet pirate videos We Lost Our Gold, but the creators decided Hurricane Sandy irreparably damaged the puzzle trail, dug up the treasure, and donated the money to relief efforts.?Meanwhile, Real?Escape Game, a narrative-driven series of puzzle adventures, made its way to the United States from Japan with a number locked room mysteries.

Final Thoughts for 2012

In spite of all the talk about the end of the world in 2012 and ARGs being dead, we?re still here. The games discussed above represent only a small sampling of the alternate reality gaming and transmedia storytelling spaces, and I expect that problem to get more difficult every year. Frankly, I wouldn?t have it any other way. Readily available resources and innovative tools are lowering the barriers of entry for creation, and revenue streams are increasingly integrated into experience design beyond traditional advertising revenues through Kickstarter campaigns, live event admission fees, product integration, the sale of tangible items, and subscription services.

Hints at major campaigns for 2013 are already beginning to surface. JJ Abrams? new?Star Trek film hid a sign-up page for a new viral experience in the film?s newest trailer, and Google?s?Niantic Project game is still in closed beta, with prospective players chomping at the bit to start competing for world domination.?Animism has returned for a second alternate reality game launching on January 1st with Grind City University, there?s bound to be something for everyone.

I inevitably neglected to mention more than a few key moments of the year, like?Homestuck?s Adventure Game raising almost $2.5 million on Kickstarter, an international art heist game that culminated with an event at the European Parliament, or my unrepentant glee at finally getting to hear Jack and Eugene bicker as I play Zombies, Run.?Feel free to share your own favorite moments in the comments, or check out our look back at the highlights from 2011.

New York's MTA subway data hits Android in beta form

Subway Time for Android

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority this week released its "Subway Time" app for iOS, which gives real-time updates for trains in and and around New York City. Need to know how soon a certain train will be at a certain station? That's the app to have.

Only, we use Android around these here parts. And MTA's not making an app for us. But what it is doing is making the data freely available to anyone -- and we've already seen our first "unofficial" app released in beta. Subway Time for Android, released by The Holodeck, taps into that MTA data and brings a fairly functional app to Android. There are bugs. There are layout issues. But those can be fixed. That we're seeing the app ported over in just a matter of days is proof positive that we're on the right side here, folks. So break out those MTA cards and let's give this guy a go.

Defence Department sets rent increase cap for some members at military housing

HALIFAX - The federal government has put a cap on rent increases for newer serving members at Department of National Defence housing units across Canada.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay says a rent increase limit of 2.21 per cent for the 2013-14 fiscal year has been set for some privates and officer cadets effective April 1.

MacKay says rent will also not increase at the 4 Wing Cold Lake military housing units in Alberta, which was set to swell by about nine per cent next year ? about $92 a month.

MacKay says the cap attempts to provide parity for members in lower earning brackets who often seek housing outside the military because it's more affordable.

A news release says monthly rent for privates has increased 27 per cent over the past 10 years, while officer cadets saw a similar increase at 25 per cent.

There are more than 12,500 military housing units in 28 locations across Canada.

Senate leaders work to avoid New Year's "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional negotiators burrowed into their offices on Saturday to see if they could stop the U.S. economy from falling off of a "fiscal cliff" in just three days when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans in one shot are scheduled to begin.

Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell worked through the day on a possible compromise that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to kick in next week.

A variety of lower taxes are scheduled to expire at the end of Monday, the last day of the year. If allowed to rise, the approximately $500 billion value of the revenue increases would represent a historic hike when taken together.

The combined punch of the tax increases and spending cuts could push the U.S. economy back into recession.

"We're now at the point where, in just a couple days, the law says that every American's tax rates are going up. Every American's paycheck will get a lot smaller. And that would be the wrong thing to do for our economy," President Barack Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, which was broadcast on Saturday.

McConnell left the U.S. Capitol after spending seven hours in his office. "We've been trading paper all day and talks continue into the evening," he told reporters on his way out.

A source with knowledge of the talks, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "We are still very far apart with almost no time left on the clock."

TEMPORARY PATCHES

One congressional aide close to the talks said that most of what was being discussed late on Saturday would provide temporary patches to the "fiscal cliff" dilemma. The negotiations, the aide said, likely could extend into Sunday.

"They continue to go round and round," the aide said of the negotiations, with ideas constantly in flux.

The aide, who asked not to be identified, said negotiators were discussing the possibility of putting off for a few months the $109 billion in automatic spending cuts due to start on Wednesday. Those cuts would be divided equally between military and non-military programs. It is feared that they could cause severe disruptions inside federal agencies if allowed to occur.

Earlier this week, talk of a temporary delay in the spending cuts was met with derision by some congressional aides.

The extension of the low income tax rates first put in place under Republican former President George W. Bush would also be on a temporary basis, probably one year, the aide said.

No deal had been reached on the most difficult question: Democrats' demand that upper-income earners - families making more than $250,000 a year - see their tax rates go up.

Republicans had been opposed to any rate increase, but lately have signaled a willingness to go along with a higher threshold - and a $400,000 figure has been floating around for days.

Under proposals being discussed, top earners could see their income tax rate rise to 39.6 percent, from the current 35 percent, in order to help tame budget deficits.

The aide added that Republicans still had not agreed to Obama's call for extending long-term unemployment benefits, but that they were demanding some spending cuts to be included in a stop-gap deal.

Disagreements over what to do about low estate taxes that are expiring also had not been worked out, the aide said.

Unless Congress acts, the tax is set to jump on Tuesday - the first day of 2013 - to 55 percent with the first $1 million exempted for individuals. Currently, there is a 35 percent tax and a $5 million exemption.

A Senate Republican leadership aide said that it might not be known until sometime on Sunday whether these talks bear fruit. That is when the leaders are expected to brief their rank-and-file members.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a rare Sunday session beginning at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), but it was not clear whether the chamber would have "fiscal cliff" legislation to act upon.

One Democratic aide was pessimistic that McConnell would come up with a counteroffer that Reid would find acceptable. Such a counteroffer would have to be calibrated in a way that also could attract votes from conservative House of Representatives Republicans, many of whom have balked at tax rate increases on anyone.

'HARD TO SEE'

A senior House Republican aide on Saturday voiced pessimism about prospects for a deal.

"It's hard to see Reid agreeing to anything that can get the votes of the majority of the (Republican) majority in the House, thereby allowing a bipartisan accomplishment," the aide said. A "majority of the majority" refers to the 241 Republicans who are in the 435-member House.

The Republican aide placed the blame squarely on Democrats, as many Republican members have done publicly, saying that going off the "fiscal cliff" is a "policy upside" for them. "Higher taxes, devastating defense cuts. The polls tell them they can win the PR (publican relations) war in January. From their perspective, why stop the cliff dive?"

Democrats, in turn, have publicly accused House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, of preferring to put off any tough "fiscal cliff" votes until after a January 3 House election in which he is expected to win another two-year term as speaker.

If McConnell and Reid can manage to reach a deal on inheritance taxes and raising income tax rates on the wealthiest Americans, they likely would throw into the compromise some other "fiscal cliff" solutions.

Those could include extending an array of other expiring tax breaks such as one that encourages companies to conduct research and development. Also, Congress wants to prevent a steep pay-cut in January for doctors who treat elderly patients under the Medicare health insurance program.

Lawmakers also want to prevent middle-class taxpayers from inadvertently creeping into a higher tax bracket, known as the alternative minimum tax, intended for the wealthiest.

If the Reid-McConnell effort fails, Obama has asked the Senate to hold a vote on Monday on a "basic package" that would stop taxes from going up on the middle class and would extend long-term unemployment benefits that are about to expire. If it passes the Senate, its fate would be in the hands of the Republican-controlled House.
