During the months of August and September, the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation Library in Florence is proud to offer an exhibit of photographs from the South Carolina Heart Gallery. These photographs capture the children in a way words cannot, and when displayed together, they tell a larger story of hundreds of South Carolina boys and girls who need adoptive families. The power of photography works on an individual level to connect each child with prospective parents while elevating public awareness about an otherwise hidden need. Viewers are often inspired to consider how they can help, even if they cannot adopt themselves.
The Heart Gallery is a national adoption recruitment program that began in 2001 in New Mexico and was started in South Carolina in 2005. The South Carolina Heart Gallery, a collaborative program of the Department of Social Services and the Children?s Foster Care Review Board, is designed to help secure permanent homes for foster children who are legally free for adoption. While nearly 4000 children are in foster care across the state, approximately 1600 of these children have a plan of adoption and more than700 are available for adoption but do not have a potential family identified.
With adoption through the South Carolina Department of Social Services, unlike many private adoptions, there are no fees. Families are provided with support and training and can be male or female, married or single.
The Heart Gallery in South Carolina is always looking for volunteer photographers and locations to place the gallery. If you would like more information on how you can help, or if you would like to become an adoptive parent, please contact Program Coordinator Millie Qualls at mqualls@oepp.sc.gov or 803-734-2595. Or visit our website at www.scheartgallery.org.
