Self Improvement

I was watching this movie with my in-laws and when I saw this scene where the boy encounters magnetic rocks floating over a chasm and decides to jump from rock to rock it was already obviously impossible but given the theme of the movie, I let it go..
I figured the movie was assuming that the bottom of the chasm had an incredibly strong magnetic charge that was repelling that of the bottom of the rocks... which would have to have the same charge... Somehow unaffected by all the shaking and wobbling caused by a boy jumping on them... A long shot, but for entertainment purposes, okay I guess.
But then I saw the rock the boy was on actually FLIP OVER... and then back around. The rock Should have snapped him immediately to the bottom of the chasm because it would have HAD to have been the opposite charge as the bottom of the chasm.
I called bull$hit and my mother in law came up with SOME explanation for how it could happen, but it's completely impossible, right? In magnetism, ALL of the particles in the object are arranged so that one side is always negative and one side is always positive... The way she was saying it was that the entire rock and all sides of it could hold just one charge.
