An 3.9 earthquake that rattled the Berkeley area Thursday afternoon was felt by people across the Bay Area.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor occurred two miles from Berkeley at 2:41 p.m., possibly along the Hayward fault. It was centered near the Golden Bear pool at UC Berkeley.

Berkeley students said the quake moved desks and prompted some students to leave class. "The whole room shook!" wrote one student on Twitter.

People reported feeling the quake along a large swath of the East Bay and Northern California.

The depth was recorded at 5.6 miles.
