Baseball and Rock Climbing for Greenheart ? Center for Cultural ...

By Molly Friend

Local Coordinator Annie Reifsnyder found a winning combination when she chose to join Greenheart volunteer projects with cultural excursions. In September she took her 3 exchange students: Natalya ?Natasha? of Russia, Jiahui ?Andy? of China, and Anh ?Todd? of Vietnam along with their host families for an afternoon of seed harvesting and trash removal at the Hank Aaron Trail in Milwaukee.? A Department of Natural Resources representative shared with the group why they harvested these particular seeds and also showed before and after photos of the trail, highlighting the positive impact that volunteers had made in the area. After the volunteer activity, the exchange students and their families headed over to Milwaukee Brewers stadium to enjoy a sports tailgate. It was a Greenheart-style tailgate where families brought their own plates to cut down on trash and food waste was also separated to compost. The students finished off the day by experiencing major league baseball and watched the Milwaukee Brewers clinch their playoff spot. Annie commented after the event, ?Adding a Greenheart component to your CCI activities is easy and it adds so much to their experience while they are here.?

Just last weekend Annie took her students again for Greenheart environmental project and finished the day off with rock climbing at Devil?s Lake State Park. For the Greenheart volunteer project Natasha, Andy, and Todd picked up trash along the lake shoreline and trails throughout the state park and inspired other hikers along the way. Todd?s host dad organized the rock climbing event for the exchange students. They all courageously climbed the cliff, including Natasha who is blind!

It sounds like Local Coordinator Annie is on to something here! Next month she plans to take students to a home for the elderly where her grandmother resides to share musical performances that highlight their different cultures.? We say keep the exciting cultural and volunteer activities coming!
