U.S. drive against al Shabaab pressures Somali-American money transfers

(Reuters) - A Chicago man pleaded guilty on Monday to planning to join an al Qaeda-linked group in Somalia, the latest U.S. prosecution in a crackdown that has made it harder for Somali-Americans to send money to the war-torn country.

Shaker Masri, 28, was arrested in August 2010 as he prepared to leave the United States and agreed to serve nearly 10 years in prison, the U.S. Justice Department said.

The prosecutions of Masri and others since the Sept 11, 2001, attacks are designed to stop support to al Shabaab, a militant group the United States says has ties to al-Qaeda.

The campaign against al Shabaab has had a chilling impact on legitimate money transfers from the Somali-American community to relatives in one of the world's poorest countries, Somali-Americans said.

For more than two decades, Somalia has been ravaged by a civil war that has left the country with no functioning central banking system and an income per person only a little over $200 a year, according to the World Bank.

Somali-Americans in Minnesota and other states rely on small money services businesses to funnel money to their relatives in Somalia.

But many U.S. banks stopped hosting accounts for those businesses because U.S. laws, starting with the Patriot Act, made them potentially liable if money ended up in the hands of al Shabaab. The U.S. State Department designated al Shabaab a foreign terrorist organization in 2008.

Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank and TCF Bank stopped providing account services in recent years.

Sunrise Community Banks stopped at the end of 2011, and others have dropped out since, adding to the concerns of Somali-Americans in Minnesota, home to the largest Somali population in the United States at about 34,500, according to census data.

Maryama Abdi, speaking through an interpreter at the Karmel mall in south Minneapolis, said she sent up to $150 a month to family in Somalia using money transfer businesses.

People survive "because of the exchange connections and the money we are sending," Abdi said. "They can use it to buy milk."

SENDING $100 MILLION A YEAR HOME

U.S.-based Somalis send more than $100 million a year back home, according to the U.S. Treasury, mostly $100 or $200 at a time. The Somali government has estimated about $2 billion, or one-third of its gross domestic product, reaches the country through money transfer businesses.

As part of the crackdown on links to al-Shabaab, 18 people face federal charges in an investigation into funding and recruiting for al Shabaab in Minnesota, and several have pleaded guilty. About 20 men have left Minneapolis for Somalia to join al Shabaab since September 2007 and at least two of the men charged in the Minnesota investigation are believed to have been killed there.

U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat, supports legislation to reduce the regulatory burden on the banks for providing the money transfer services.

"The end goal is to shut down terrorist financing," Ellison said in a telephone interview. "The end goal is not to shut down American immigrant-owned small businesses."

About 17 banks across the United States still facilitate those transactions, Ellison said earlier this month.

The chairman of the Somali American Money Services Association, Said Malin, said his members were concerned about the uncertainty.

"People are rushing to come and send in money to loved ones," Malin said. "Every other month, they say this is the last month, or next month or the third month."

All 14 members of the association shut down temporarily after Sunrise stopped providing services at the end of 2011, but 11 were able to reopen using other banking sources, Malin said.

At Karmel mall, Faduma Alim said her whole family suffered if her sick eldest son did not receive the $150 or $200 she sends each month to care for him and his four children.

"That is how he survives," said Alim, who also sends money to support the six children of her deceased brother, who live with their grandmother. "It's the only banking system we have."

Clearing Up College Finance Confusion

clearing up financing confusion - cropped

There are some naysayers out there who, citing the number of student loan defaults,?say that graduating from college creates more financial burdens than it does career opportunities. We know that?s just not true. But, we do think that figuring out how to?finance one?s education can be overwhelming.

To make it easier to understand the true costs and financing?options associated with enrolling at the college or university of your choice, the Department of Education has recently come up with The Shopping Sheet ? a standardized financial aid award letter breaking down the cost of tuition and fees as well as the available student grants, loans, and scholarships available to you. This standardized sheet will make it much easier to compare your financial aid options, and thus the ultimate attendance?costs, for each school you?re considering. To view a sample Shopping Sheet, click here.

We hope that?all colleges and universities adopt this simplified method to communicate your options for financing your education. But as of now, use of The Shopping Sheet is entirely voluntary. If you feel this tool would help you make better, informed decisions about which school will provide the best value for your education, contact the administration of the schools you?re interested in and let them know.

Here is an excerpt from the letter Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, sent to college presidents nationwide:

Students should not have to wait until after they graduate to find out the size of their monthly student loan payment. Families choosing a college should have clear and comparable information in a common format to guide their choice. And no one should forego college because they think they cannot afford it. Our goal is that more students will arrive at school each fall less worried about how they will pay for college and? more focused on how they will complete college.

We couldn?t agree more.

Ubisoft Uplay DRM found to include a rootkit ? Video Games ...

Update: It looks as though Ubisoft has responded quickly to this issue and a Uplay update has already been released. As the screenshot below shows, the browser plug-in will no longer allow access to anything other than the Uplay application. Even so, this was a major oversight on Ubisoft?s part and I doubt this is the last we?ll hear of it.

Ubisoft is one publisher that has fully embraced the use of always-connected DRM in its games. They believe this cuts down of piracy, but at the same time it frustrates gamers who legitimately purchase Ubisoft titles because without a reliable Internet connection they can?t play the game they have bought.

Those same gamers may have another reason to get very angry with Ubisoft today. It has been discovered that the Uplay system Ubisoft uses to both check a game is legal and offer up gaming achievements, multiplayer, and additional content, actually contains a rootkit.

The discovery was made by Tavis Ormandy, and information security engineer at Google, when he installed Assassin?s Creed: Revelations on his laptop. He noticed that during the installation Uplay installed a browser plug-in that allows any website to gain access to your machine through a backdoor and take control of it.

The plug-in can be classed as a rootkit because it is thought to allow continued privileged access to a machine without a user?s consent. If this was limited just to the Uplay service with regard to checking games are legal it would still be a major concern, but the fact any website could potentially use the plugin escalates the seriousness of what is happening here.

The rootkit was only disclosed yesterday, so it?s unlikely anyone at Ubisoft has had time to look into the claims. What?s worrying in the number of games this affects due to their use of Uplay. In total there are 21 titles including 5 Assassin?s Creed games, 3 Tom Clancy games, as well as popular titles such as Driver: San Francisco, and Settlers 7, which together will mean potentially hundreds of thousands of PCs are at risk of being exploited.

We?ll keep an eye out for Ubisoft responding to the rootkit claims and let you know what they say. If they have been installing rootkits then we could see a backlash on the same scale as Sony faced back when it shipped a rootkit on music CDs a few years ago.

NYC Thyroid Workshops for Patients to Focus on Weight Loss and Diet

?

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 15, 2010

Best-selling author and thyroid patient advocate Mary Shomon will be leading a series of interactive workshops for thyroid patients at New York City?s Open Center on Friday July 30, 2010, and Saturday July 31, 2010.

Says Shomon, ?My workshops at the Open Center are designed to help fast-forward thyroid patients up the learning curve, arm them with information they need, and help them put together a plan to be empowered, and proactive patients. These are essentials for those of us who want to lose weight, and feel well. ?

Shomon, who is the author of ten books on thyroid disease and hormonal health, including the New York Times bestseller, ?The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss,? has been on the faculty at the Open Center, New York?s Leading Center of Holistic Learning, since 2006.

Shomon?s special guest presenter at both workshops will be holistic physician/gynecologist, health coach and writer Rebecca Elia, MD, from the Bay Area of California, who will be sharing information on how to integrate holistic ideas and practices into your life for optimum thyroid health.

Thyroid diet Workshop Focuses on the Thyroid?s Role in weight loss Challenges

The workshop titled ?The Thyroid diet for Weight Loss,? will be held on Friday July 30, 2010, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The workshop is designed for people who may be struggling with weight loss challenges due to an undiagnosed, or insufficiently treated thyroid condition. An underactive thyroid or undertreated thyroid problem can make it difficult or impossible to lose weight ? or even cause unexpected weight gain ? in those who are following a healthy diet and exercise program. In this three-hour interactive seminar, the nation?s leading thyroid patient advocate will explore three key steps to weight loss success:

1. How to find out if you have a thyroid problem ? knowing the signs, symptoms, and risk factors for an underactive thyroid, as well as which tests needed to get a reliable diagnosis.

2. How an underactive thyroid is treated, including alternative modalities most doctors simply don?t discuss.

3. How to optimize thyroid treatment and counteract hormonal resistance syndromes ? including insulin, leptin, adrenal, and hypothalamic resistance ? that can sabotage your weight loss efforts.

Workshop participants will come away with a plan to effectively reach a healthier weight and get thyroid and hormonal resistance issues out of the way of health and weight loss success.

The Thyroid Diet workshop on July 30 is $ 35 for Open Center members, and $ 40 for nonmembers. Registration with the Open Center is by telephone at 212.219.2527 or online at: http://www.opencenter.org/the-thyroid-diet-for-weight-loss

10 reasons to drop Windows for Mountain Lion

2 hrs.

I guess you could say I started cheating on Windows back in October of 2010. That?s when Apple debuted the revamped?MacBook Air. For the first time, I could resume working almost as soon as I flipped the lid on a laptop, thanks to the way the?notebook?leveraged its flash memory. (Intel and?Ultrabook?makers wouldn?t offer a similar instant-on experience until a year later.)

The Air was a work of art, but it didn?t feel complete until?OS X Lion?arrived last year. With key time-saving features like Auto Save and Mission Control for faster multitasking, I started leaving behind my Windows notebook more and more.?Now that?Mountain Lion?is here, I may never look back. Here are 10 reasons why you might want to do the same.

iCloud Keeps Devices, Files in Sync

Make a change on a Pages document in Mountain Lion and iCloud will automatically update it on your iPad. It doesn't get any easier than that if you happen to own Apple's slate. You don't even have to think about whether to bring your MacBook or iPad with you when you leave the house, because everything is already in sync.

iCloud also keeps your Numbers and Keynote files up to date, and neatly presents all of your recent documents when you open any of the above apps. I just wish Apple's iWork suite could automatically save docs as Office-friendly versions by default for sharing with Windows users; instead, you have to check off a box every time.

Reminders App Uses Your Location

What's the point of putting together a to-do list if you're not going to follow through? The Reminders app in Mountain Lion vastly increases the chances you're going to cross more stuff off by the end of the day.

For starters, you can pin any list to your desktop just by double-clicking it, so you'll be less likely to ignore those tasks. Second ? and this is a biggie for me ? you can add a location to specific reminders. For example, just this morning I set a reminder to pick up my TransitChek card for when I arrived at work, and my iPhone buzzed as I emerged from the subway. I have no excuses now.

Usually when I pull out my laptop out at home, the kids moan and groan that daddy is about to do work again. But Mountain Lion's AirPlay Mirroring feature instantly changed their minds. With a single click I started streaming photos I took at a nearby park to an Apple TV. Then I streamed a trailer for "Ice Age 4" from YouTube.

Even better, I could mirror a game of ?RC Mini Racers? from the Mac to my HDTV, and within seconds the kids wanted to take over. AirPlay Mirroring is so simple to set up compared to Intel's WiDi and any DLNA solution on the Windows side, I can easily see Apple TVs popping up in classrooms and conference rooms.

Speak to Type

Take this down, Microsoft. Mountain Lion converts your words into text anywhere you can type. This is a great way to compose memos, emails or even tweet when your hands are full. It couldn?t be easier to start dictating. Just double tap the Function key to bring up a little microphone, then tap it again to finish. While we wish dictation worked offline, it has proved accurate in our testing, including punctuation.

Send and Receive Texts from the Desktop

When I?m at work I find texts on my iPhone pretty distracting, so I welcome the new Messages application for Mountain Lion. It integrates iMessages and all of your favorite IM clients (AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo, Jabber, etc.) into a single app. This way I can communicate with my wife when she?s on her iPhone right from the desktop. And if she sends me a photo I can double-click it to make it bigger and then share it on Facebook.

Game Center: Take That, Xbox

There?s no question that Windows still trumps the Mac when it comes to the number of games available, but Mountain Lion brings a secret weapon. With Game Center your Mac can tap into a community that has grown to 130 million iOS gamers, enabling you to compare scores and achievements across both Mac and iOS games. Plus, a growing number of titles let you challenge your buddies on their iPhone and iPad, such as ?Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy.?

Faster, Smarter Browsing With Safari?

As someone who constantly has too many tabs open, the new Tab View is a godsend for me. Just pinch to zoom out, and you?ll see large thumbnails of all of your open tabs, making it easier to see what?s what and decide what to close.

Safari is smarter than Windows? Internet Explorer in other ways. The new unified address bar is another huge time-saver, which presents Top Sites, recommended Google Search results and bookmarks and your surfing history as you type.

Notifications All In One Place

While I like the way Windows 8 shows your notifications within its Live Tiles for apps, Mountain Lion?s Notification Center makes it easier to see all of your alerts at a glance. Notification Center is also highly customizable. You can choose how many alerts you want to display from each app and the order of how they appear. Plus, you can turn all of the notifications off with a click when you need to be heads down. Bonus: you can post right to Twitter and Facebook from this menu.

Mail VIPs: Never Miss an Email from Your Boss

This unsung feature of Mountain Lion makes it easy to set up an instant folder of messages for very important people, whether it?s your boss, spouse or anyone else whose emails you simply cannot miss.

All you have to do is star that person?s name from within a message and you?ll have a VIP folder. You can even tweak the settings so that you?ll only get Notifications when new messages from VIPs arrive.

It?s More Like Windows Than Windows 8

Recently, Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart issued this tweet: ?OS X Mountain Lion is a more natural upgrade from Windows 7 than moving to Windows 8.? There?s actually some truth to this comment because Windows 8 represents a radical user interface change for the world?s most popular desktop OS. Mountain Lion may borrow plenty of elements from iOS, from Launchpad to apps like Notes, but it?s still very much a traditional operating system. In Windows 8, the desktop is its own app, which may prove jarring to a lot of users. Mountain Lion could very well be that more familiar alternative.

Chinese weightlifters look for Beijing repeat

Chinese weightlifters will bid to replicate their performance on home soil in Beijing at the London Olympics.

China topped the medal table in 2008, claiming eight of the 15 golds on offer and one silver in an awesome display of lifting across the board.

Some 260 athletes, 156 men and 104 women, will once again compete for the 15 medals at the ExCel arena, in east London's docklands area.

The two competition lifts in order are the snatch, and the clean and jerk, with each lifter entitled to three attempts in each.

The combined total of the highest two successful lifts determines the overall result within a bodyweight category.

The men compete in the -56, 62, 69, 77, 85, 94, 105 and +105kg categories and the women at -48, 53, 58, 63, 69, 75 and +75kg.

There is a quota of 10 lifters per National Olympic Committee, six men and four women, with a maximum of two per event.

Men's weightlifting featured at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, with women's weightlifting introduced at the Sydney Games in 2000.

Two lifters surpassed three worlds records at China's National Women's Weightlifting Championships.

Tian Yuan, world champion last year in Paris, stole the spotlight in the 48kg category, the 19-year-old jerking 126kg to finish with a total of 221kg, bettering both the world records in jerk by 5kg and the total by 4kg.

In the 53kg category, world bronze medallist Ji Jing snatched a world record 104kg in the snatch, 1kg more than the previous best set by injured teammate Li Ping.

World silver medallist Li Xueying also impressed in the 58kg category, lifting a total of 250kg, just 1kg off compatriot Chen Yanqing's world record set in 2006.

But Association president Ma warned: "I'm very happy to see these good results but it's too early to say we are fully confident to claim gold medals in these categories.

"We do have advantage in the light categories such as 48kg and 53kg, but there are not enough top lifters in each categories. If we have two or three in every division, I will be more satisfied."

The women's super-heavyweight category saw the absence of South Korea's reigning Olympic champion Jang Mi-Ran in the worlds after she struggled to battle injury and regain form.

While sidelined, younger lifters have stepped up and set world records in her +75kg division, Russian Tatiana Kashirina in the snatch (148kg) and China's world champion Zhou Lulu in the total (328kg).

"Obviously, I don't have fond memories of 2011," said Jang, one of the most decorated female weight lifters in history having also won four world titles and the Asian Games.

"But I think I can accomplish my dream if I can stick to the programme."

Chinese men's weightlifting coach Chen Wenbin said he was happy with the controversial selection policy that has seen just one of the four male gold medallists from Beijing return to the London Olympics.

Only Lu Yong made the cut from the quartet that topped podiums on home soil four years ago.

"It's not a big problem because we have lifters like Wu Jingbiao and Zhang Jie who competed at the 2011 Asian Games and did very well," said Chen.

"Our lifters have experience of big competitions, all this is familiar to them."

Cyber defenders urged to go on the offense

Computer security champions on Wednesday were urged to hunt down and eliminate hackers, spies, terrorists and other online evildoers to prevent devastating Internet Age attacks.

The first day of briefings at a prestigious Black Hat computer security gathering here opened with a former FBI cyber crime unit chief calling for a shift from defense to offense when it comes to protecting networks.

"We need warriors to fight our enemies, particularly in the cyber world right now," Shawn Henry said in a Black Hat keynote presentation that kicked off with dramatic video of hostage rescue teams training.

"I believe the threat from computer network attack is the most significant threat we face as a civilized world, other than a weapon of mass destruction."

The peril grows as water supplies, power grids, financial transactions, and more rely on the Internet and as modern lives increasingly involve working and playing on smartphones or tablet computers, according to Henry.

He rolled off a list of adversaries ranging from spies and well-funded criminals to disgruntled employees with inside knowledge of company networks.

"Cyber is the great equalizer," Henry said.

"With a $500 laptop with an Internet connection anybody, anywhere in the world can attack any organization, any company," he continued. "The last time I checked, that was about 2.3 billion people."

After 24 years of working for the FBI, Henry in April switched to the private sector as the head of a division at startup CrowdStrike specializing in cyber attack incident responses and identifying adversaries.

The computer security industry to expand its arsenal beyond just building walls, filters and other safeguards against online intruders to include watching for, and gathering intelligence on, culprits who have slipped through.

"It is not enough to watch the perimeter," Henry said, equating computer security to protecting real world offices. "We have to be constantly hunting; looking for tripwires."

In the cyber world, that translates into monitoring system activities such as whether files have been accessed or changed and by whom.

"The sophisticated adversary will get over that firewall and walk around, like an invisible man," Henry said. "We have to mitigate that threat."

Tactics for fighting cyber intruders should include gathering information about how they operate and the tools used, and then sharing the data in the industry and with law enforcement agencies in relevant countries.

"Intelligence is the key to all of this," Henry said. "If we understand who the adversary is, we can take specific actions."

Teamwork between governments and private companies means that options for responding to identified cyber attackers can range from improved network software to political sanctions or even military strikes, according to Henry.

"You can't make every school, every mall, every university, and every workplace impenetrable," Henry said. "We have to look at who the adversary is and stop them in advance of them walking in."

Black Hat founder Jeff Moss, the self-described hacker behind the notorious Def Con gathering that starts here on Thursday, backed Henry's argument.

"Maybe we need some white blood cells out there; companies willing to push the edge and focus on threat actors," Moss said, calling on the computer security community to "raise the immunity level."

Moss is head of security at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees the world's website addresses.

"So, am I Luke, or am I Darth Vader; sometimes I'm not sure," Moss quipped about his roles in the hacker realm and the computer security industry.

"It depends upon which day and who asks."

Moss proposed that cyber attackers also be fought on legal fronts, with companies taking suspected culprits to court.

"I can't print money; I can't raise an army, but I can hire lawyers and they are almost as good," Moss said. "One way to fight the enemy is you just sue them."

Henry feared that it may take an Internet version of the infamous 9/11 attack in New York City to get the world to take the cyber threat to heart.

"We need to get down range and take them out of the fight," Henry said.

"As well-trained, well-equipped cyber warriors you can have an impact; the stakes are high."

PFT: Jones-Drew will be a no-show at camp

Bounties Vilma FootballAP

As Jonathan Vilma marches into a Louisiana courtroom in the hopes of being able very soon to march onto the field with the rest of the Saints, he will bring with him eight potential witnesses.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Vilma plans to call interim head coach Joe Vitt and current/former teammates Scott Shanle, Jonathan Casillas, Roman Harper, Sedrick Ellis, Troy Evans, and Randall Gay.

We?re told that Darren Sharper also could be a late addition, if he can get to court in time.

Not on the list is Drew Brees, who has submitted an affidavit in support of Vilam?s effort to lift his suspension while the lawsuit challenging the one-year ban proceeds.

Also not on the list but submitting an affidavit is Pierson Prioleau, who played with the Saints from 2009 through 2011 and with three other teams coached by former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.? Prioleau explains that Williams? pre-game rantings ?were exactly the same for every team.?? Prioleau says the players regarded the tough talk as a motivational speech, and that the players ?were always reminded to never hurt the team with illegal or selfish play.?

?I?ve never seen anyone rewarded for any illegal action or for injuring another player,? Prioleau says.

Prioleau?s affidavit doesn?t mention whether Williams used a pay-for-performance system that rewarded players for rendering opponents unable to continue via good, clean, legal hits.

Vilma also plans to introduce more than 20 exhibits, consisting of among other things portions of the league?s investigation file and letters exchanged regarding the suspension and Vilma?s decision not to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell before or after the suspension was imposed.

Whether Vilma is likely to eventually win the war is one of the factors that Judge Helen G. Berrigan will consider in deciding the outcome of this key battle.? Others include whether he?ll suffer ?irreparable harm? if he?s suspended now and later wins the case, and whether more damage will be done to Vilma with the suspension kept in place or to the NFL with the suspension lifted.? Also, the ?public interest? is a common, but often nebulous, factor in efforts of this nature.

The StarCaps litigation resulted in the a court blocking multiple suspensions until the litigation was resolved.? In that case, the ?irreparable harm? factor drove the outcome.? It could, in this case, be the determining factor, too.

Judge Berrigan could rule on the motion at the hearing, or she could take the matter under advisement and rule later.? Either way, time is of the essence; Vilma can?t participate in any practices or preseason games unless and until the suspension is lifted.

Nexus 7 covers now listed as 'in stock' at Google Play

Nexus 7 cover

The official cover for the Google Nexus 7 is an elusive beast. As soon as they became available for order, they sold out, and chances are nobody you know got one. The lucky folks that did get their hands on one seem to be enjoying it, and don't have to worry about the back of their new precious getting all scuffed up or the glass getting scratched in a backpack or bag. The good news is that they are available once again, and you can grab one from Google Play for $20 and $10 shipping. We've no idea how long they will last this time, so you might want to jump on one now that you have the chance.

We just ordered a couple of them, and we'll be sure to give them a good look when they arrive.

OS X Mountain Lion now available in the Mac App Store, and what it means for iOS users

Mountain Lion, Apple's next generation desktop OS is now available for $19.99 -- here's what it means to iOS users, and for Windows users thinking of switching

OS X Mountain Lion, the 8th generation of Apple's desktop operating system and the elder brother with which iOS shares much of it's digital DNA, is now available in the Mac App Store.

Most iOS users still use Windows as their primary desktop operating system. Even as the iPad is replacing traditional, lower-level desktop tasks like email, web browsing, and gaming for more and more of the mainstream, when it comes to proper old operating systems, Microsoft is still king.

Yet Apple's choosing an incredibly interesting way to try and change that, at least for the users it cares about most. No, not you, geeky gaming rig guy in the basement. No, not you beleaguered beige box guy in the cubicle. No, not even you, media server maven guy with your house all wired. With Mountain Lion, as with Lion before it, targets the casual user -- that very same mainstream user who's gotten an iPad for many things, but still needs a traditional computer for some things. A car driver looking for a familiarly appointed truck.

Familiarity is the key. Familiarity is a feature. Though they share many of the same underpinnings, OS X and iOS are very different animals. (One's a big cat, for starters.) Yet Apple understands that, for the user, the interface and the experience is the app. So with Mountain Lion, they've made more of the OS X interface and experience more closely match iOS than ever. Which makes sense, given the iOS user base not only dwarfs the OS X user base, but consists of the very users Apple wants to reach most -- those for whom traditional computers have always been inaccessible, intimidating, and off-putting.

$19.99 - Download now

Setup and iCloud

OS X Mountain Lion now sets up similarly to iOS 5 -- you enter your iCloud-associated Apple ID and almost everything gets done for you. It's not quite that simple of course, at least not yet, but it's vastly better than computers of even a few years ago.

You still have to choose or take a profile picture, which is irksome to those of us who've used Macs with .Mac and MobileMe for years, and iCloud now, who'd really love to have the option to use our existing iCloud avatar. You also still have to fill out registration information. iOS skips both these steps, and for the better.

Once you're done you're done and in, however, and everything that syncs between your iOS devices also syncs between your iOS devices and Macs. (Apple technically doesn't use sync for iCloud but "store and push".)

All your stuff is "just there", and because Apple has made OS X apps sound, look, and even feel more like iOS apps, all your stuff is easy to find as well.

Built-in apps

With OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has continued to bring iOS concepts "back to the Mac" with mostly good, and in some cases excellent results.

Calendars & Contacts

Gone are the iCal and Address Book of old, and in their place are Calendar and Contacts, just like iOS. They got an iPad-style makeover last year with OS X Lion, so this year the name is the biggest change. It may not seem like a big deal, but for an iOS user it makes them instantly recognizable and referable across Apple's platforms.

Messages

Likewise, iChat has become Messages... and is more problematic. iMessage delivered a much-needed roshambo to the carrier price gouge that was SMS, and worked in a similar fashion. It was in context. It was understood. Even on the iPad, iMessages made some sense, even if dual-wielders had to put up with dual accounts (phone number for iPhone, Apple ID for iPad and iPod touch) -- and dual alarms! (iOS 6 will fix this by allowing phone numbers and Apple IDs to be merged for iMessage and FaceTime.) On OS X, however, the iMessage/iChat hybrid is messy.

On one hand, if you're working on the Mac, it's faster to respond to iMessages on the Mac than to switch devices and do it on the iPhone or iPad. On the other, holy triple beeping hell, Batman. I've turned off alerts for iMessage on everything but my iPhone, since it's always with me. That way I only get one notification, but can reply from the device of my choosing. A more elegant solution from Apple, however, awaits.

Notes & Reminders

Added to the built in OS X app suite are Notes and Reminders, which now exist and do on OS X what they done on iOS since versions 1 and 5 respectively. They're no more or less than any iOS user would expect, but being able to expect them on the desktop as well as mobile is significant.

Safari

Safari, meanwhile, has lost the separate search field and now has a unified bar for URL entry and search. Google Chrome pioneered this and Apple has copied it, no doubt to delight of many. I've never been a huge fan but I've gotten used to it, and it's nice to have Safari and Chrome on the same page for those of us who switch frequently between them.

Also gone, to my immense consternation, is Safari RSS. Not just the ability to use Safari as an RSS reader gone (which was handy on occasion), you can't even open an RSS file to look at. Apple tells you to go jump in the Mac App Store and buy an app. Removing RSS from public view is one thing. Preventing your web browser from opening files is another. For shame.

On the plus side, Apple has given Safari for Mac the outstanding Action button from iOS, so you can easily share a web page in a variety of ways. I used to close my Mac and pick up my iPad just to share links in a non-frustrating way. Now, if I happen to be on my Mac, it's just as easy as if I was on iOS.

Also like Chrome, iCloud will now sync your tabs between OS X and iOS, so you can leave home with a web page loaded, and keep up with it on the go. Or vice-versa. Just make sure, if anyone else has access to you Mac or iPad at home or at work, you stick to tabs you're comfortable with everyone seeing you have open.

Yeah.

Notifications

Notification Center has moved from iOS to OS X and... actually works better on OS X. In iOS, Apple copied the base functionality of Google's pre-Android 4.1 notification window shade, but hasn't gone much beyond that. Rollovers still block buttons, and annoyingly to designers, linen appears in an overlay interface element rather than a background element. On Mountain Lion, a two finger swipe from the right edge of the trackpad moves the desktop aside to reveal Notification Center behind it. Notification appear as overlays at the top right of the screen and are even less obtrusive than they are on iOS.

They're still not actionable, however, and that's where Apple is behind Android today, and webOS from years ago. Hopefully that's addresses in a future version. Having a notification appear and being able to quickly adjust controls or jot down a response without switching apps is the way it's meant to be done.

AirPlay and Game Center

The single biggest feature for me in Mountain Lion is AirPlay. Anyone who owns a Mac and an Apple TV will instantly attach to AirPlay on OS X because, like me, they will have wanted it forever. To be able to play any video on your Mac, or view any screen, and at the click of a menu button have it instantly beamed to the big screen TV is one of the Holy Grails of geekdom. And for the most part, it works great.

One of the other Holy Grails (greeks are demanding, we have several), is cross-platform gaming. Mountain Lion provides that as well, with Game Center moving from iOS to OS X. If the same game is available on both desktop and mobile, and it's integrated into Game Center, you can race between iPod touch and Mac as easily as you could shoot between iPhone and iPad last week. It has its quirks, and it might take a while for developers to truly nail the experience between their apps, but it's fantastic.

If anyone had any reason to even consider not getting Mountain Lion, AirPlay and Game Center should have you clicking away your $19.99 right now.

Note: Some older Intel Macs won't get AirPlay in the update, which is beyond annoying.

Twitter and Facebook

If you use them, Apple has integrated Twitter and Facebook into Mountain Lion. Since Apple has struggled with their own social networks, and appears to have no interest in owning social the way they own the core OS and cloud, it was a good choice, and works well enough.

Gate Keeper

Previously, OS X on the Mac was the polar opposite of iOS when it came to how you could install and run apps. On iOS, unless you jailbreak, the App Store and the App Store alone is where you get your apps. With OS X Lion last year, Apple introduced the Mac App Store, but left the traditional, 3rd party vendor system in place and untouched as well. And yeah, phew.

However, the iOS approach is safer, easier, more secure, and carries other benefits, especially for a mainstream customer. So with OS X Mountain Lion, Apple is giving users a choice. Well, three choices actually.

  1. Only allow apps to be installed and run from the Mac App Store
  2. Only allow apps to be installed and run from the Mac App Store and signed, certified developers.
  3. Allow any apps from anywhere to run.

It's a model many have wanted on iOS, even if it's unlikely Apple would ever do it. (There aren't many iOS apps that Apple would allow under Gatekeeper that they wouldn't already allow under the App Store -- no system modifications, for example, would get through either.)

For those who are internet savvy and fancy free, option 3 means the Mac will behave as it always have. For those for whom software on the desktop has always been a scary mess, option 1 makes it as close to iOS as possible. If not win/win, it's absolutely tie/tie.

Dictation

There's no Siri in OS X yet, but like the new iPad with iOS 5.1, there is Dictation. For those of us who've grown lazy typing thanks to Siri and Dictation, that's welcome news.

Upgrade advise

I'm not sure OS X is similar enough to iOS that I can recommend everything go out an update immediately, like most of us do with iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Computers are trickier beasts with more moving parts. If you aren't a comfortable, confident, early adapter (who is likely already on a pre-release version.), wait a while. Wait a day or a week until any problems have been identified and fixed. Wait a month or more if you have mission critical software that you can't have fail on a new OS.

Apple is on yearly OS X update cycles now, just like iOS, but the same old computer advice applies: slow and steady wins the reliability race.

Conclusion

Apple touts over 200 new features in Mountain Lion, including many specifically for the growing Chinese market. For me, it's not the number that matters but the nature. Making OS X look and feel more like iOS is a smart play by Apple. Previously, anyone getting into the Apple ecosystem via an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad might have looked at a Mac and seen something just as alien as a Windows PC. Now they'll see something just as familiar as their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Now, there's actually a reason iOS users, especially mainstream ones who are new to or have never been comfortable with traditional computers, to choose Mac over Windows -- it feels like just one more iOS device, a more capable if complicated one. It feels like a nicely appointed, leather stitched, linen-lined truck.

Sure, some element of the market has always had a compelling reason to choose Mac -- it was prettier or friendlier or simply fit the way they worked better. But many didn't. Many went with Windows for reasons every bit as legitimate to their feelings and needs.

Apple may not convert many more Windows devotees to Mac with Mountain Lion, but they'll convert or simply attract a great percentage of those who previously had no strong loyalty one way or another. They'll get the iOS using mainstream, and that's good for both Apple and mainstream computer users or users-to-be.

I had my mom try it out this weekend -- my version of the ultimate usability test -- and even though she's been using Lion for year, she found it immediately more relatable simply by virtue of the similar apps. That's no doubt what Apple was going for, and what they've achieved.

And for those worried that Apple is "dumbing down" the Mac for iOS users -- you still have Terminal. You're fine.

AOL Beats Earnings Expectations, Lowest ... - Business Insider

AOL reported earnings this morning, and came in ahead of expectations.

The company reported revenue of $531 million, beating Wall Street's estimates of $519 million.

That revenue represents just a 2% decline from the same quarter last year, which is the company's lowest decline in seven years.

AOL's traffic hit 112 million uniques, a 4% increase from the first quarter of 2012 and up 5% from the fourth quarter of 2011.

Peter Kafka at AllThingsD notes that AOL's domestic display ad sales - a weak spot for the company - were flat, but improved from the previous quarter's declines.

"Today's results represent a significant milestone for AOL as we returned to Adjusted OIBDA growth for the first time in four years," said Tim Armstrong, Chairman and CEO. "The strong results and consumer performance we announced today are clear signs our strategic and operating efforts are translating into significant financial progress."

Roku Becomes Pay TV?s Streaming Box Of Choice, Raises $45 Million From News Corp, BSkyB, And Others

roku 2 xsWhen Roku first entered the streaming video market, it was seen as a boon for cord cutters, who could watch streaming content from online distributors like Netflix and Hulu Plus on TV. But lately, it's begun courting app makers from traditional content producers, securing apps for premium networks like HBO and working with pay TV providers like DISH to bring their content over-the-top. With that in mind, Roku has raised a giant new round of funding, led by a couple of impressive strategic investors from the old media world. Roku's closed a $45 million Series E round, including money from News Corp and British Sky Broadcasting, as well as another unnamed strategic investor. Also participating are previous Roku investors Menlo Ventures and Globespan Capital. In addition to the new funds, News Corp chief digital officer Jon Miller has joined the Roku board. Altogether Roku has raised a total of $77 million since being founded in 2008.
