IMMIGRATION EQUALITY STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT?S S.B. 1070 RULING
WASHINGTON, DC ? Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality, a national organization fighting for equality under U.S. immigration law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive individuals, issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court?s ruling on Arizona?s S.B. 1070 immigration law.
?In upholding a core provision of Arizona?s anti-immigrant law ? known as ?papers please? ? the Supreme Court has condoned targeting immigrant families for prosecution, and potential separation based on what they look like. The ruling will have immediate consequences, including for lesbian and gay families who cannot obtain lawful permanent residence based on their relationships.?
?While the court was right to strike down several other punishing provisions of the law, this split decision underscores the urgent need for Congress to tackle comprehensive, inclusive immigration reform that treats immigrants and their families fairly. Everyone within our borders, and their families, deserve to be treated respectfully, and equally, under the law.?
