Writing and technology. | Scientopia Guests' Blog

Recently someone shared an article about the value of hand writing and how culturally we are beginning to lose this ability with the opening of new technologies. The article entitled the writing on screen in addition to a historical tour around the development of writing, stops to remember the value of hand writing hand; for example, it enables the integration visuo spatial and maintains fine motor skills.

Among the most remarkable advantages, the article mentions the personal and exclusive characteristic of hand writing and it?s common that persons judge us by the details of our writing; strictly speaking, the modeling of the letters on a surface, and also reflects the character of a person.

We must add to these advantages the neural bases needed to write, which include the pre and motor areas, pre frontal cortex, language areas, which allow the process from conceive an idea, give meaning to it, put it into words, write each letter in its place giving the right space between then and enough cadence to our writing to be meaningful for the reader.

And although now we write on keyboard, by pressing keys, or simply touching letters on a screen, the process carried out by fingers and hand are different. It?s obvious when a left-handed child write by hand, because they take a particular position when they have the wrong chair. On the keyboards or touch screens that does not matter. In addition, software corrected spelling (when the word is in the dictionary) and sometimes helps with the syntax.

However, Keyboards allow a speed of writing hardly reachable by the hand writing, (except in the case of doctors, whose writing is incomprehensible), and also allow the use of both hands, unlike the handwriting.

Another difference is the fact that hand writing requires movement to outline each of the letters, which means the motor and visual recognition by the brain; while typing only makes recognition of a visual way; and this can produce the common error of finger. That's why handwriting and the writing with the keyboard are in analysis by neuroscience, although the rule is that more is better, so it does not reason to drop skills, but combine them. That?s the reason for new apps trying to emulate handwriting on the screen.

But for the brain, writing is not only delineate a understandable letters, it?s a process that can be highly specialized, for example, requiring think ?an idea to share, conceptual thinking, the transfer of knowledge, judgment, critical analysis, sometimes induction, deduction, attention to details, troubleshooting and empathy to mention just a few needs.

And now more than never before, authors require knowledge of the subject to be addressed and when a publication is online, then we must think that every word need the precise meaning, because the culture determines the impact of a phrase.

But writing is much more than just collecting letters. Most of us started copying letters on a sheet, but becoming a writer must give logic to ideas and say them correctly and thinking of a reader. Writing is trying to occupy the attention of a person for a moment and at the end of our ideas leave something to think about.

And of course the technology has changed the way we say things. When we were students, our favorite teacher was who allowed us to write just few pages, and more if he or she ?added the phrase: what matters is the idea and not the number of words.

Now we hate Twitter by the restriction that involves, how is it possible to explain to someone the theory of multiple colors in black and white if you only have 140 characters?.

And on Facebook, how can we show to everybody how we feel if there are 3 thousand people saying things all at the same time? What I said is left in the bottom of the most heated discussions, just like when the teacher lost our ideas. How can our words touch to our readers?

And if we feel little less young, because we is still have the need to write on paper, or if we can?t change the ?tik, tik of the ?keys when each letter is taking its place on the screen, okay, there are things that cannot be side, if our written stories provided a meaning for someone.

A good friend told me recently that he likes to write with a pen, because he likes the sound of the pen on paper and the smell of the ink. I must admit that I have a notebook on my desktop with a stylish covering of leather and fabric that always has a sheet ready for when I have not time to turn on any other device and this notebook has never left me escape a single idea.

When I was student, we called mental diarrhea when we had many ideas to write, so many that they did not fit on a page, although it was always the fear that professor never was going to read them. Now we read less, there is so much information floating everywhere, at the same time, all in unison that the readings should be brief, more brief must better, to the point, because there is already another story ringing in the TweetDeck screen, and we have waiting magazines and books to serve as a support to the writings and searches of last second that complements what we have to say.

And I ask apologies to my readers and editors, but when I have one idea, I can?t say it in 600 words, my ideas are not happy until they can be clear and I try to reach to all possible readers, because I have readers who won?t understand me, readers who will understand me and some others, just will pretend to understand me.

This is the reason? why writings are such as antidepressants, take them as medical directions, and don't expect that they take effect quickly. Sometimes a reading makes sense one or two months later, sometimes that never happens, so I recommend taking a new dose when you feel it?s necessary.

What if it is true is that either the list of super, a letter to Santa Claus, or a story, children must learn to write, unless you want to read the complaints of teachers, at all levels, saying that the students do not know to write. And no desire to upset anyone, I think children never do it by themselves if we don?t invites them to do it, if writing is not seen as a cultural need, it will see as a school torture.

Instead of saying that someone has bad spelling or that his writing is incomprehensible, we should spend a minute to explain clearly what that do not understand and toast the opportunity that students discover the door to share ideas, without forgetting, however, that some are other most eloquent means of expression, whatever the way you decide, handwriting, typing or taping.
