This weekend, game designers from across ?the globe will get together to create games in just 48 hours. Usually, such events are based around a theme, and the MolyJam is no different; the goal?is to create games that are inspired by, or pays tribute to Peter Molydeux.
No, he's not the creator of such hits as "Populous" and "Fable." That's Peter Molyneux. We're talking about a parody Twitter account that politely pokes fun at the slightly crazy things that the noted game designer often says. Got that?
@PeterMolydeux has been all the rage among game designers since it first hit the scene almost a year ago. In addition to comping up with absurd, stream of consciousness ideas ("Have you ever played a racing game and wanted to play as the road rather than the cars? I know I have?"), are the occasional YouTube clips that further drives the insanity home.
For example, there's the following idea, which would allow gamers to stage a protest -- in game -- over any challenge he or she feels is unjust:
The account became so popular that high profile members of the game industry began to notice, often saying how Peter Molydeux's wacky ideas are not the least bit shabby. A few outspoken individuals firmly believe they are indicative of how stale game industry has become, and some of the ideas should be developed into actual games.
This led to Anna Kipnis, programmer at Double Fine, to jokingly tweet that an indie game jam with teams should actually happen. The idea quickly caught on, with participants from across the globe eager to make the Peter Molydeux's dreams a reality.
By the way, who exactly is behind Peter Molydeux? No one really knows, but an interview conducted by Kotaku Australia last year paints the picture of a game designer who is simply a big fan of Peter Molyneux's bigger than life ideas. The satire is all just for fun.
As for what the true inspiration thinks of all this, he's actually a fan, and according to the Escapist, Molyneux himself will?be participating in the MolyJam.

'Thank God, he was there': JetBlue co-pilot an unlikely hero
A federal criminal complaint alleges that JetBlue captain Clayton Osbon told his first officer, "we need to take a leap of faith." NBC's Tom Costello reports.

In the wake of JetBlue captain?Clayton Osbon's?mid-air meltdown on Tuesday, many are calling first officer Jason Dowd, the?co-pilot of flight 191, a hero.
Pilots train for a range of in-flight mishaps including sick passengers, emergency landings and terrorist attacks, the Associated Press reports. But Dowd faced the rarest of scenarios: deciding whether to lock his incapacitated captain out of the cockpit and make an emergency landing after Osbon began exhibiting bizarre behavior.
Osbon, 49, is charged with interfering with a flight crew and, if convicted, could face 20 years in prison.
According to court documents,?Dowd was "really worried" when Osbon told him "we need to take a leap of faith." Concerned about Osbon's behavior, Dowd suggested that they invite an off-duty JetBlue captain who was flying as a passenger to come into the cockpit
Instead, witness accounts describe Osbon telling his co-pilot "things just don't matter" and sprinting down the center aisle ? yelling jumbled remarks about Sept. 11 and Iran.
The off-duty captain then joined Dowd, and from inside the locked cockpit, which Osbon tried to re-enter by banging on the door, the co-pilot gave an order through the intercom to restrain Osbon, according to the documents, which don't mention Dowd by name.?
Clayton Osbon, who had been flying for nearly 25 years, allegedly began yelling at air traffic controllers and later ran toward the cockpit door after getting locked out. He has been charged with interfering with a flight crew. NBC's Tom Costello reports.
The New York to Las Vegas flight was diverted to Amarillo, Texas, and Dowd safely landed the plane.?
Dowd, an Ohio native who still lives in his hometown of Salem,?is staying out of the public eye for now, but a wave of overnight fame ? much like 'Miracle on the Hudson' Capt. Chesley Sullenberger ? likely awaits. JetBlue says the decision on whether to go public is up to him, but they're not commenting more out of respect for his privacy.
JetBlue has praised Dowd's actions,?along with crew members and an off-duty pilot who stepped in to assist.
"Knowing my son, he would think that he's not a hero. He just did what he was paid to do," Dowd's mother, Jean Beatrice Dowd, told CNN.
"That's just his job, and he loves his job. He's just a quiet man."
His mother-in-law Ruth Ann Kostal said Thursday that Dowd doesn't think he's a hero, but she's not surprised he acted cool under pressure.
"I'm glad for those people he was the co-pilot that day," Kostal said. "Thank God, he was there."
Dowd hasn't been able to come home yet because he's still being interviewed by federal authorities in New York, Kostal said. He has made no public comments about Tuesday's flight.
?Passengers, including those who helped restrain Osbon, also credit Dowd for landing their plane safely.
"I think the co-pilot is really the hero here," passenger Tony Antolino told TODAY. "He had the instincts to recognize that something was going horribly wrong in the cockpit."
David Gonzalez, a 50-year-old former New York corrections office from Tannersville, Pa., who helped tackle Osbon, credits Dowd for getting the captain out of the cockpit and locking the door so he couldn't get back in.
"It's because of his actions that we're here," Gonzalez said of Dowd.
?Public relations experts say there are big pros and cons to going public, like what "Sully" and his co-captain Jeff Skiles experienced in the aftermath of their emergency landing in the Hudson River.?
"For some folks it's a lot to deal with ? especially all at once," said Dr. Ron Bishop, a professor of culture and communication at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "It seems given all the outlets and different means in which we communicate, the attention paid to a person in that situation is ramped up considerably."?
David E. Johnson, CEO of Strategic Vision, LLC, a leading public relations agency, said if Dowd comes forward, it would likely give JetBlue a needed public relations boost.
"JetBlue needs someone to really step the forefront. It's the second person there that's gone berserk they need to show that they've got good and heroic employees," he said.
In 2010, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater pulled the emergency chute on a flight after it landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He went on the public-address system, swore at a passenger, grabbed a beer and slid down onto the tarmac. He was sentenced to probation, counseling and substance abuse treatment for attempted criminal mischief.
As much as JetBlue likely wants to put Slater's and Osbon's outbursts behind them, Johnson said there's another reason why Dowd may not want to go public.
"He's probably just very low key and just thinks he did what he was supposed to do," Johnson said.?

Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute have synthesized a pair of small molecules that dramatically alter the core biological clock in animal models, highlighting the compounds' potential effectiveness in treating a remarkable range of disorders -- including obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and serious sleep disorders.
The study was published on March 29, 2012, in an advance, online edition of the journal Nature.
The study showed that when administered in animal models the synthetic small molecules altered circadian rhythm and the pattern of core clock gene expression in the brain's hypothalamus, the site of the master cellular clock that synchronizes daily rhythms in mammals; circadian rhythms are the physiological processes that respond to a 24-hour cycle of light and dark and are present in most living things.
When given to diet-induced obese mice, these same small molecules decreased obesity by reducing fat mass and markedly improving cholesterol levels and hyperglycemia -- chronically high blood sugar levels that frequently lead to diabetes.
"The idea behind this research is that our circadian rhythms are coupled with metabolic processes and that you can modulate them pharmacologically," said Thomas Burris, a professor at Scripps Florida who led the study. "As it turns out, the effect of that modulation is surprisingly positive -- everything has been beneficial so far."
Burris stressed that these compounds were first generation -- the first to hit their targets in vivo with room for improvement as potential treatments. "In terms of therapeutics, this is really the first step," he said.
In the new study, the team identified and tested a pair of potent synthetic compounds that activate proteins called REV-ERB? and REV-ERB?, which play an integral role in regulating the expression of core clock proteins that drive biological rhythms in activity and metabolism.
In the study, the scientists observed clear metabolic effects when the synthetic compounds were administered twice a day for 12 days. Animals displayed weight loss due to decreased fat mass with no changes in the amount of food they ate. The animals followed the human model of obesity closely, eating a standard Western diet of high fat, high sugar foods, yet still lost weight when given the compounds.
In one of the study's more striking findings, both synthetic compounds were shown to reduce cholesterol production. Cholesterol in the blood of treated animal models decreased 47 percent; triglycerides in the blood decreased 12 percent.
The circadian pattern of expression of a number of metabolic genes in the liver, skeletal muscle, and in fat tissue was also altered, resulting in increased energy expenditure, something of a surprise. In the study, the scientists observed a five percent increase in oxygen consumption, suggesting increased energy expenditure during the day and at night. However, these increases were not due to increased activity -- the animals displayed an overall 15 percent decrease in movement during those same time periods.
In addition to its impact on metabolism, the two compounds also affected the animals' activity during periods of light and darkness, suggesting that this class of compound may be useful for the treatment of sleep disorders, including the common problem of jet lag.
The first authors of the study, "Regulation of Circadian Behavior and Metabolism by Synthetic REV?ERB Agonists," are Laura A. Solt and Yongjun Wang of Scripps Research. Other authors include Subhashis Banerjee, Travis Hughes, Douglas J. Kojetin, Thomas Lundasen, Youseung Shin, Jin Liu, Michael D. Cameron, Romain Noel, Andrew A. Butler, and Theodore M. Kamenecka of Scripps Research; and Seung?Hee Yoo and Joseph S. Takahashi of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

I?ve been in the business for 10 years and have experienced massive success, and colossal failure.?Do you want to know what the secret to real estate investing success is??THERE ARE NO SECRETS.? No magic dust. No path of least resistance.?No short cuts. However, there are a lot of painful truths, like:
- It takes money to buy real estate (maybe not your money, but somebody involved in the deal will need the cash to close and for you to get paid).
- It takes time to buy real estate (good deals aren?t growing on trees).
- Most contractors over promise and under deliver.
- You will not get rich quick.
- You will have to work hard (nights and weekends included).

Nearly seven out of 10 home improvement shoppers say they are not brand loyal when it comes to buying big-ticket items, according to The Complex Shopper, a study conducted by The Integer Group and Decision Analyst. The research also found that about 70 percent of window/door shoppers did not have any prior experience with the brand or company they ultimately picked when buying.
?Considering it may be three, five, even 10 years between purchases of home improvement items?ranging from flooring and gutters to kitchen cabinets and faucets?it?s not so surprising that shoppers turn to new brands when it?s time to replace or upgrade,? says Frank Maher, Integer COO and president of its Midwest office. ?However, home improvement brands can turn shoppers into loyal brand advocates by understanding their shopping behaviors and committing to long-term communication in between those purchases.?
In a report entitled ?Revealing the Motivations that Drive Home Improvement Shoppers,? Integer shares insights around home improvement categories in general, and in-depth findings in three categories: flooring, windows/doors and major appliances. Among its findings are that window/door and flooring shoppers spend the greatest amount of time researching?often by retail site and not brand?before in-store shopping.
The report identifies four shopper types?the Experience Lover, the Fretting Frugal, the Passive Purchase and the Social Adventurer?and reviews how they interact differently with home improvement brands. For instance, the relatively younger Social Adventurer segment is more apt to take action after purchase than other shopper types because of their social shopping behavior.? The research points out the potential these types have to become another medium to advertise a brand.?
?Understanding what your shoppers want and expect from you is the key to creating an ongoing relationship,? Maher says. ?Knowing who wants to engage with you, and how, will help brands develop successful communications and loyalty strategies that encourage their shoppers to become brand advocates.?

Microsoft is collaborating with the financial services industry in?an?unprecedented, cross-industry action against notorious?cybercrime operations behind online fraud and identity theft.
In its most complex effort to disrupt botnets to date,?Microsoft Corp., in collaboration with the financial services industry ? including the Financial Services ??Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC) and NACHA ? The Electronic Payments Association ? as well?as Kyrus Tech Inc., announced it has successfully executed a coordinated global action against some of the most?notorious cybercrime operations that fuel online fraud and identity theft. With this legal and technical action, a?number of the most harmful botnets using the Zeus family of malware worldwide have been disrupted in an?unprecedented, proactive cross-industry action against this cybercriminal organization.
Through an extensive and collaborative investigation into the Zeus threat, Microsoft and its banking, finance and?technical partners discovered that once a computer is infected with Zeus, the malware can monitor a victim?s online?activity and automatically start keylogging, or recording a person?s every keystroke, when a person types in the?name of a financial institution or ecommerce site. With this information, cybercriminals can steal personal?information that can be used for identity theft or to fraudulently make purchases or access other private accounts. In?fact, since 2007, Microsoft has detected more than 13 million suspected infections of the Zeus malware worldwide,?including approximately 3 million computers in the United States alone.
?With this action, we?ve disrupted a critical source of money-making for digital fraudsters and cyberthieves, while?gaining important information to help identify those responsible and better protect victims,? said Richard?Boscovich, senior attorney for the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit. ?The Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit has long been?working to combat cybercrime operations, and today is a particularly important strike against cybercrime that we?expect will be felt across the criminal underground for a long time to come.?
This disruption was made possible through a successful pleading before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern?District of New York, which allowed Microsoft and its partners to conduct a coordinated seizure of command and?control servers running some of the worst known Zeus botnets. Because the botnet operators used Zeus to steal?victims? online banking credentials and transfer stolen funds, FS-ISAC and NACHA joined Microsoft as plaintiffs in?the civil suit, and Kyrus Tech Inc. served as a declarant in the case. Other organizations, including F-Secure, also?provided supporting information for the case.
As a part of the operation, on March 23, Microsoft and its co-plaintiffs, escorted by the U.S. Marshals, seized?command and control servers in two hosting locations, Scranton, Pa., and Lombard, Ill., to seize and preserve?valuable data and virtual evidence from the botnets for the case. Microsoft and its partners took down two Internet?Protocol addresses behind the Zeus command and control structure, and Microsoft is currently monitoring 800?domains secured in the operation, which are helping identify thousands of computers infected by Zeus.
This is the second time Microsoft has conducted physical seizures in a botnet operation, and it is the first time other?organizations have joined Microsoft as plaintiffs in the legal case for a botnet operation. This is also the first?operation for Microsoft that involved the simultaneous disruption of multiple operating botnets in a single action?and is the first known time the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act has been applied as the?legal basis in a consolidated civil case to charge all those responsible in the use of a botnet.
?As crimes against banks and their customers move from stickups to mouse clicks, we?re also using our own mouse?clicks ? as well as the law ? to help protect consumers and businesses,? said Greg Garcia, a spokesperson for the?three major financial industry associations that worked with Microsoft on this initiative. ?Disrupting the Zeus?botnets is just one strike in our long-term commitment to help defend and protect people.?
Because of the complexities of these targets, unlike Microsoft?s previous botnet operations, the goal of this action?was not to permanently shut down all impacted Zeus botnets. However, this action is expected to significantly?impact the cybercriminals? operations and infrastructure, advance global efforts to help victims regain control of?their infected computers, and also help further investigations against those responsible for the threat. As with its?previous botnet operations, Microsoft will now use the intelligence gained from this operation to partner with?Internet service providers and Community Emergency Response Teams around the world to help rescue people?s?computers from the control of Zeus, helping to reduce the size of the threat that these botnets pose and to help make?the Internet safer for consumers and businesses worldwide. Together, these aspects of the operation are expected to?undermine the criminal infrastructure that relies on these botnets every day to make money and to help provide new?tools for the industry to work together to proactively fight cybercrime.

The current "watch-and-wait" approach to high blood pressure readings in younger people may set patients on a course for irreversible heart damage, according to research presented March 26 at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session. The Scientific Session, the premier cardiovascular medical meeting, brings cardiovascular professionals together to further advances in the field.
The study tracked cardiac health indicators over the course of a lifetime to predict future outcomes and found that a sharp rise in blood pressure in midlife, not just crossing a certain threshold, can increase a person's risk of heart disease later in life. Furthermore, the study showed blood pressure medications do not fully reverse damage to the heart from high blood pressure, even if drugs are successful in returning blood pressure to normal levels. The findings suggest that early detection and treatment of rapidly rising blood pressure in midlife may be required to prevent long-term damage to the heart.
"Just being on blood pressure medication will not completely get your heart back to where it was before you started having high blood pressure," said Arjun K. Ghosh, MBBS, MRCP (U.K.), clinical research fellow at the International Centre for Circulatory Health of Britain's National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and clinical career development fellow at the U.K. Medical Research Council's Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing on behalf of the study team.
Based on the study findings, Dr. Ghosh said a borderline or pre-hypertensive blood pressure reading (a systolic pressure of 120 to 139 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure from 80 to 89 mm Hg) -- even in your 30s -- should warrant more frequent monitoring so doctors can assess the rate of change in blood pressure. Current guidelines are based on a single, one-off measure of blood pressure and doctors rarely prescribe blood pressure-lowering medications for people in their 30s, as the risk of them having a cardiovascular event in the next 10 years is low.
"If people have a rapid rise in blood pressure, early treatment should be considered, because we know from this study that, 30 years down the line, they're going to have more heart damage than somebody with a slower rise in blood pressure," Dr. Ghosh said. "We're potentially talking about a completely new way of assessing and treating blood pressure in younger people."
The results revealed people who experienced a relatively rapid increase in blood pressure during midlife typically had a larger left ventricle -- an independent risk factor for heart disease and other health problems -- than those whose blood pressure edged up more slowly or later in life. Those taking medication to manage high blood pressure had a larger left ventricle than those with the same blood pressure who had never taken medication, suggesting that treatment in later life did not reverse the consequences of a rapid rise in blood pressure in earlier years.
Doctors are currently more likely to recommend blood pressure medications for older people who have a higher overall cardiovascular risk, thanks in part to their age, and few monitor patients' blood pressure frequently enough to track the rate of increase. However, said Dr. Ghosh, "that approach may be fundamentally incorrect, because you're not taking into account your previous life-course blood pressure. You need to watch more closely, and you need to identify if there is a rapid rise in blood pressure."
The findings resulted from a study of 1,653 men and women born in Britain in one week in March 1946. Now entering its 66th year, the study represents the longest-running birth cohort in the U.K. and is also one of the longest-running in the world. Participants were screened for blood pressure and other health indicators at ages 36, 43 and 53. From age 60-64, participants underwent echocardiography imaging to allow researchers to assess their heart health.
This study is based on data from the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development, a long-term birth cohort study funded by the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom. Dr. Ghosh has no conflicts of interest to report.
