Vibe One is the idea of Carlisle businessman and BBC Radio Cumbria presenter Andy Wood.

It will broadcast 24 hours a day, staffed almost entirely by volunteers.

Test transmissions through its web site ? www.vibeoneradio.co.uk ? began at the start of the year and the station is due to go live on May 1.

Mr Wood, 30, presents an early morning programme on Radio Cumbria.

He will continue to work for the BBC and so, for contractual reasons, cannot broadcast on Vibe One.

He said: ?The aim is not to challenge existing media outlets.

?We are looking at something different, with the social-inclusion angle allowing members of the community to train up to be on air?.

The output will be entirely music. There are no plans for news bulletins, for example.

Mr Wood said: ?We will play a variety of well-known songs from all decades through the day and appeal to a younger generation with a mix of dance and R&B during the evening.?

There will also be a slot for Polish pop music on Sunday nights to cater for migrant workers.

Mr Wood, of Sandsfield Park, Carlisle, has been in radio for nearly 14 years as a presenter and head of production with The Hits, 97.4 Rock FM, Century Radio, and CFM where he spent seven years as drive-time presenter.

He used to own a car repair business, Atlas Garage in Denton Holme, but sold it last May to help finance Vibe One, which launches on June 1.

Preparations have been going on for more than a year and have included buying equipment, setting up the website and putting in place a music database, licences, insurance, imaging, voice-overs and marketing.

He hopes to secure premises shortly, probably at Carlisle Enterprise Centre in James Street.

Mr Wood believes it is time that Carlisle had an online-only radio station.

He said: ?You can do most things online these days.

?Research shows an increasing popularity in receiving radio this way with an estimated 22 per cent of over-13s switching to internet radio via PC, android, ipad and smartphone.

?Year on year online listening is going up.

?There are other places around the country that have online-only stations, so why not Carlisle??

Like all commercial stations, Vibe One will depend on advertising revenue.

Indeed, the only employee will be a sales person.

The presenters will be unpaid volunteers perhaps looking for a first break in broadcasting.

Mr Wood, who grew up in Raffles and went to Morton School, said: ?When I was starting out in radio, there was nowhere locally to get experience.

?Vibe One is the chance for members of the community, regardless of age or experience, to bring their ideas to life thanks to the professional training offered free to anyone who wishes to be involved.?
