While all eyes and cameras in Geneva were trained on wild hypercars LaFerrari, Lamborghini Veneno, and McLaren?s P1, among others, low-volume Dutch sports car maker Spyker revealed its sleek ?100,000 Porsche 911 rival.
The Spyker B6 Venator Concept, billed as ?a unique alternative in the high luxury sports sector,? is a compact, two-door mid-engine sports car with lots of aviation-inspired elements. ?Venator? is Latin for ?Hunter? ? a nod back to Spyker?s Hunter fighter plane of the early 20th century. The coupe was designed by Victor R. Muller, CEO of Spyker, the company that once owned Saab.
The Venator concept measures 4,347mm long and 1,882mm wide, with a 2,500mm wheelbase. That?s about 144 mm shorter than Porsche?s icon, but 74 mm wider.
With an all carbon fibre body and all aluminium platform, the Venator weighs less than 1,400 kg. It will be powered by a rear-mid mounted V6 engine with ?375+ bhp? and power will go to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Aviation-inspired it may be, but the Venator is no mere flight of fancy. Production will begin in early 2014 for key markets including Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and India, followed by the US in autumn 2014.
But after all the Saab and China misadventures, do they have the money to grow? Spyker says that its financial standing is strong, thanks to the recent conversion of all shareholder debt into equity and a ?10 million share issue to China?s Youngman, Proton?s Chinese ally. Spyker actually recorded a ?125 million profit last year, so yes, there are funds.
