D.C. has become home to some of the biggest lobbying groups in the country, and just like most major corporations that have to operate in the U.S., many of the major silicon valley ?heavy hitters? are not immune to the politics of collaborating with federal policy makers. The Internet Association is a relatively new lobbying group in the District that represents some of the biggest and most recognizable Internet companies in the country, including?groups like Airbnb, Amazon.com, AOL, eBay, Expedia, Facebook, Google, IAC, LinkedIn, Monster Worldwide, Rackspace, salesforce.com, TripAdvisor, Yahoo!, and Zynga. In the spirit of D.C. Social Media Week, the Internet Association is hosting a local Dupont Circle ?small business crawl? Tuesday evening in an effort to drive more awareness to the positive economic impact the Internet has had on small businesses across the country.?
The Internet Association is facilitating a guided tour of five of Dupont?s most successful brick and mortar shops and is inviting members of the community (from both small businesses, startups, and tech) to join the crawl. Here is the current schedule for the event, as well as each of the participating Dupont businesses:
- STOP 1: ?5:00 pm ?- 5:20 pm: Tranquil Space Yoga Studio, 1632 17th Street NW
- STOP 2: ?5:30 pm ? 5:50 pm: Lou Lou Boutique, 1601 Connecticut Ave NW
- STOP 3: ?6:00 pm ? 6:20 pm: ?Hello Cupcake Bakery, 1361 Connecticut Ave NW
- STOP 4: ?6:30 pm ? 6:50 pm: PoliTemps Staffing Agency, 2000 P Street, NW #400
- STOP 5: ?7:00 pm ?- 8:00 pm: Proper Topper Boutique, 1350 Connecticut Ave NW
At each of the stores, participants of the tour can interview and engage the local merchants as to how the Internet and its associated web technologies have positively impacted their business. Several representatives from the local government and community will also be in attendance, including leaders from the Mayor?s office, the D.C. Chamber of Commerce, and the small business community.
This should be a great opportunity to experience how web technologies have assisted the mom and pop shops of ?Main Street? America in staying competitive with the bigger chains and companies out there, and should provide some interesting insights as to how businesses in our local community utilize online tools to their advantage.
The tour will begin Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 5:00 pm EST and end at 8:00 pm EST.
