The mayor of a northwest Queensland city has reportedly been charged with drink driving.

ABC Radio reports that Mount Isa mayor John Molony will appear in court on Wednesday after returning a blood alcohol reading of 0.111 on New Year's Eve.

Police say they charged a 69-year-old man with drink-driving after he returned a positive blood alcohol reading on Marian Street, Mount Isa, around 9.45am (AEST) on Saturday.

Molony gained national attention in 2008 when he suggested "beauty-disadvantaged" females move to the mining city, reckoning they would improve their chances of finding love there because of a five to one male to female ratio.

When confronted by local women outraged by his comments, he remarked, "The protesters are blaming me for their looks."

The storm earned the mayor an Ernie award for sexist remarks.
