AUTOS: Subaru Shows BRZ Sports Coupe
Joint project with Toyota revealed before debut at Tokyo Motor Show; Toyota/Scion version already made public.
Hot on the heels of Monday's reveal of the new Toyota GT 86, or Scion FR-S as it?s expected to be called in the U.S., Subaru has unveiled its version of the new jointly developed rear-wheel drive sports car, the BRZ, that will debut this week at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. While it's scheduled to make its official world debut alongside its Toyota sibling tomorrow at the Motor Show, almost everything there is to know about the BRZ has already been revealed, but there are a few more interesting tidbits.
BRZ differs from the Toyota model with unique grille and front bumper designs, headlight detailing, custom fender vents, integrated exhaust tips and revised tail-lamps. (Photo: Subaru) Unique elements of BRZ are its grille and front bumper design, headlight detailing, custom fender vents, integrated exhaust tips and revised tail-lamps. Otherwise, it's almost identical to the GT 86, right down to its naturally aspirated 2-liter engine.
Despite predictions that BRZ would be more powerful than its Toyota counterpart, Subaru has confirmed that its sports car will also feature the horizontally opposed boxer engine and Toyota?s D-4S direct-injection technology and with peak output capped at 197 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The engine is installed front mid-ship to create an ultra-low center of gravity, 475 millimeters to be exact.
BRZ will weigh just 2,689 pounds, leading to an almost ideal 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution. As for the chassis, this features MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone setup in the rear. The brakes feature fully ventilated disks and reside within 18-inch wheels shod with 215/40R18 tires up front and 225/40R18s in the rear.
Inside there?s a tachometer with a digitally displayed speedometer and bespoke sports seats. Subaru has yet to reveal the BRZ?s interior, but more images will follow its debut in Tokyo.
